10 Observer Comments

On my Mac (2.16 Ghz late 2006 iMac) the download was 157M.  On my wife’s lapotp (2.16Ghz MBPro - late 2006), it was 499M.

However, so far so good.

My L2008 MB was 499Mb as well. However it downloaded, installed, rebooted, without any problem and everything appears fine.

Interesting
My wife’s WHITE L2008 MB was 157Mb

I wonder what the logic is behind the download sizes?

It’s great to have all these problems solved - but the bug that gets Dates in Contacts (eg Birthday) wrong when syncing between Computer, iPhone & MobileMe, if you are located in Time Zone UTC+12…..... is still there, and has been for as long as I can remember.

It makes MobileMe virtually useless for syncing Contacts with any “date” data.

If Cupertino was a few thousand miles further west this would just work!

I’m still pissed off that it’s no longer possible from Software Update to simply download an update of this size. There’s no way I’m going to get two copies of 500Mb, when I could just get it once on my main machine, transport it to my laptop and install it twice.

I can see why Apple removed this feature… some users would download the “delta” (small) update for their machine (say 157 MB), then attempt to apply it to other machines (which may have required the full update).

This would cause significant support issues.  It’s much easier to force the “manual” downloaders to grab the full version from the website.

Odd that the 10.6.2 combo updater from Apple is only 479MB and my Software Update shows 499.9MB for (presumably) the delta from 10.6.1. Hrm.

The Skeptic: well, yes, but I checked on both my machines and they both wanted the big one. The Download or Download and Install options had been there for an awfully long time - and they could have got rid of it before - why now?

Dave: I installed the 479Mb download, rechecked for further updates, and there was no more to go. I agree, odd.

Dave:  I think that the gap in file sizes comes from the new “metric” approach to counting file sizes in Snow Leopard. This makes a difference because a “binary” GiB (1024^3) is not the same as a “metric” GB (1000^3).

The 10.6.2 combo update is 503.3 MB (metric), which is 479.9 MB (base binary).

Laurie:  I agree that it is annoying.  That said, it appears that Apple is using a greater variety of “delta” versions through Software Update in Snow Leopard than with previous cats.  Perhaps they felt that confusion would be too great in comparison to previous versions?

Well spotted on the counting front, Skeptic. “Consistency is the last resort of the unimaginative.” Oscar Wilde, I think.
