The problem with Apple is that they have left those of us with PowerPC’s, with major bugs in Leopard that they should fix.  Because of the bad feelings I am having with my current G5 (even though I have worked around them), I find myself beginning to compare them to Microsoft.  After 22 years of loyalty I am beginning to consider buying a PC because the quality seems to be a less of a priority then it has in the past.

Stop posting misinformation; Security Update 2009-006 is *ONLY* for Leopard, NOT Snow Leopard. The updates in Security Update 2009-006 for Leopard are available as part of 10.6.2.

How about checking your information before posting stuff on your website.

It’s the Tiger 10.4 users who have been let out of any bug fixes. Leopard 10.5 users of both hardware types will continue to get upgrades until 10.7 comes out in 18 months or so. This is normal Apple procedure. Nothing to get upset about.

I have seen no evidence that Apple will fix any of the bugs that Leopard has with PowerPC users.  Apple has known about these bugs for at least two releases (Both security and incremental releases) and has done absolutely nothing about it.

Time will tell, jojo. I don’t have any proof of that Apple is abandoning support for PowerPC Leopard users. Do you?

Everyone who has some issue thinks that everyone has the issue. It is often the case that it really affects 0.1% of users, and so gets pushed back on the priority list. Without specifics, there is really nothing to talk about. I see no reason to think that Apple isn’t being perfectly rational about this and upholding their end of the deal.

Face it people.  The G5 is obsolete.  The last one was released when? The fall of 2005? Get a new Mac for crying out loud.

Everybody I know who owns a late model G5 Dual core machine have the same problems that I am having.  The first problem, is that my machine will not sleep because of the optical drive.  However, if I place a disk in the drive the machine will sleep (problem since 10.5.6).  The second problem has to do with the energy saver preference.  If you leave it on automatic, kernel panics begin to show up on a daily basis (has been an issue since the beginning of Leopard).  Change it to high or low and they go away. 

These are very annoying and I am sure that Apple is more than a little aware of them.  But I doubt, seriously, that Apple will fix them because there will probably not be anymore major updates to Leopard.

As I said, time will tell.

I’ve know of other bugs which were fixed in previous releases. I don’t believe it has a very big priority for Apple, but bugs which aren’t have a tendency to migrate forward into current code.

As rixstep complains, much of the old Power PC code is still in Snow Leopard.

My G5 Dual is purring along nicely….. It is running Leopard Server and has been for a couple years….. I rebooted today after the Security Update…. No problems…. I’m not sure about the issue mentioned but I think the loud tone of jojo may be a little bit off….. Perhaps he/she should look for assistance in figuring out what the real problem is…. Try posting your logs… or some other tid bit and perhaps someone will post a fix…

Running the server version is not the same as the desktop version.  Heck, I am running Leopard on a G4 Dual 833 machine and it runs just fine.  I am also running the server version on a unsupported G4 dual 450 box and it runs just fine.  Of course, you did not say which G5 you were running either (dual processor or dual core).  It seems to be the late model G5’s (dual core) boxes that seem to have this issue.  I can guarantee you that I am not the only one and this issue is widespread on my particular box.

And yet, M$ just released a security update for Office 2004 today (yes, 2004. one year older than the G5 in question). That and Apple still supports XP (what’s that, 2001?!?) with boot camp and Safari. Looks like even Apple offers better legacy support for Windows than the Mac.

Not everyone can afford to buy a new Mac and all new software every two years. Some of us are now really *&#^$ed: we couldn’t upgrade our systems during the economic down turn and now we’ll have to replace EVERYTHING (hardware, peripherals, and some really expensive software) just to stay “current” so we won’t get hammered surfing the web.

In short, Jobs is saying “buy a new Mac every year, or you’re dead to me.” Nice. Especially for those of us who have been loyal Mac users even through the dark times (since 1987 for me, and, no, I’ve never owned a Windoze PC).

and yes there are differences…. but….

I too have older G4-Dual 1.25GHz that is nearing end of life as a TIger Server…..
and a PowerBook G4-500 that is just too slow to bother with Tiger Client….

So after 7 -10 years one does need to move on ....

but

5 years is not my retirement point except I’d love to run a VM on my G5-Dual but that is not going to happen with a commercially product like VMWare or Parallels…

On the other side of the spectrum…. my Apple complaints have to do with why the New OS doesn’t natively support things like eSATA…..

You are not running the same G5 that I am running.  You are running an older model.  My G5 was among last models produced.  And by the way I replace my machines every 6 to 7 years.  The average Mac user replaces their machines every 3 to 5 years.  I will not replace this G5 until next Fall at the earliest.  In the mean time Apple should fix what is obviously broken before people like me decide that they have had enough.  Over the course of OS development, with the exception being the very first beta release of OS X, the OS has become more and more problematic.  If Apple is not careful they will do themselves more harm than good.

I am not the only one having this problem.  My machine will not sleep unless I put a disk in the optical drive.  And my machine suffers kernel panics if I leave the energy saving preference for processor performance on automatic (Currently it is on high).  The sleep issue is a problem despite the fact I just replaced the drive with the hope that it would solve it.  The kernel panic is a mystery to me.  I have tried remedies from many forums (deleting preferences, repairing permissions, ect) and nothing seems to work.

I am not the only one having this problem. 

I will offer one more time….

You need to provide some actual logs and or configuration information or go back to the forums. I do troubleshooting all day long…..but not without information….
