Apple Store Smash-and-grab Leads to Fatal Shooting

| News

Suspects attempting to break into Apple’s Otay Ranch Town Center Apple Store ended up with more than they bargained for when they found themselves in a shoot out with a security guard. The incident left one suspect dead, and the other two are in police custody.

Otay Ranch Apple Store ShootingPolice arrest suspects in the Otay Ranch Apple Store robbery.

The suspects apparently drove their car through the front windows of the Apple Store around 6:30 AM on Monday, according to KGTV in San Diego. The suspects, two men and a woman, were interrupted by a private security guard that led to the shootout where about 40 rounds were fired.

A second suspect may have been shot as well.

Apple Stores seem to be popular targets for criminals, potentially because the glass store fronts are easy to smash through with cars, and because the merchandise they steal can be easily resold.

Apple hasn’t commented on the incident, nor has the company said if it has any plans to change store security procedures to help cut down on burglaries and robberies.

One thing about the Apple Store in this mall when compared to others in the San Diego area is that you can drive a car right close to it. Two of the suspect sped away in an auto and were caught in a nearby condo/apartment complex. See a Google Maps view

40 rounds? That’s a lot of lead flying around, lucky it was early so no bystandards got hit. Yikes. Spray and pray I guess.

If the 2 suspects went to a nearby condo and apprehended, then by looking at the article photo, the woman was not the one killed. Talk about dumb.

I hope that more of these idiots get caught so easily so people will give up on this loopy idea.

It was one of the males who got shot inside of the store. All three got into the get away car, but smashed into a light pole a short distance away. The mall has several “streets” going through it, they wanted a main street look to the place, so I am thinking they were parked very close to the store. The suspect who was shot stayed in the car where I presume he died. The other two fled on foot into the condo complex. See NBC 7

I should be able to get more details when the local TV news comes on at 4:00 PM.

It was about 7:00 AM and the store was not yet open for business, but the manager was working and the security guard was inside. The window was smashed in and the three suspects entered the store. When confronted by the security guard the two male suspects brandished pistols, at that point the guard drew his pistol and a gun fight ensued, both inside and outside. One suspect was shot, the guard, store manager, and others in the area were unharmed.

As I related earlier the get away car smashed into a light pole and then a wall. Two suspects ran into the condo parking lot where they tried to get man leaving for work to give them a ride to the hospital saying that the male suspect was shot. He was not shot, but was injured from the collision. At that point a motorcycle officer came into the parking lot which prompted the two suspects to flee into the grounds of the complex. Quickly a lot of police came on scene and they flushed the suspects.

The Apple Store and neighboring businesses have closed all day. Nearby schools were locked down for several hours.

See a slide show here. In several of the photos you can see how close parking spots are to the store.
