Apple’s holiday quarter sales of 37.04 million iPhones crushed the best analyst predictions.
The most blue sky prediction by professional analysts for Apples 1Q FY2012 iPhone sales prior to today was 33 million. The actual number was quite a bit higher than even that highly optimistic number, despite the extra week in Apple’s Fiscal quarter. The 37M number supports the previous analysis that Apple is gaining market share on Android.

And that’s just the iPhone. About the only solid prediction was just over 5 million Macs (which is also a record). Apple also exceeded even the best estimates of iPod and iPad sales by several million units.

Having recently replaced my iPhone 3G with a new 4S all I can say is - Phew!
iPhone 4S - Phew!
iPhone sales - Phew!
Incredible numbers and great commentary from Apple management, especially referring to the competitions’ “limited functionality” tablets.

As a happy owner of a 32GB black 4S, I agree with Lancashire-Witch: Phew, indeed!
Said it before, and I’ll say it again: ONE company, with ONE phone (in a few model variants and price points), is competing quite, quite well against the entire slew of Android OEMs and all that wonderful “openness” that’s supposed to crush the walled-garden Apple way. And let’s not even mention the joke that is Android tablets….
Well, maybe by this time NEXT YEAR Android will have done what it was supposed to do in 2010 and 2011 and render iOS a niche OS for a niche phone and a niche tablet.
Please don’t say something stupid such as “The actual number was quite a bit higher than even that highly optimistic number, despite the extra week in Apple?s Fiscal quarter”. Do you REALLY think the analysts were unaware that there was an extra week in this Fiscal Quarter ?? Give me a break !! That “highly optimistic number” ALREADY had that extra week priced into equations ... which makes this performance all the more outstanding as it is based purely upon pure “outperformance” and not upon the uneducated “misunderstandings” of analysts regarding the length of the quarter !
IDK, Damen, if analysts were better at reading markets, they would work for Apple instead of write about them. I think they’re absolutely ignorant enough to simultaneously acknowledge the extra week and not take it into account.
LOL - from what I’ve seen thus far, I can’t entirely disagree with you.

Not likely. Despite all its openy-goodness, Android sales are now being outpaced by Apple:

Wow, mrm, I seem to recall a certain someone saying that iPhones will never take the lead again. Think he has the guts to admit how wrong he was? I doubt it, seeing as how he avoids Apple’s quarterly results posting on TMO like the plague!!
Seriously though, results like this are mind boggling, especially given the global economy. 37 million iPhones in a quarter?!?!? Let the naysayers bury their heads in the sand - I don’t care. They provide a good laugh at least. Apple is kicking butt and taking names, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
