Apple’s Mini DisplayPort Spec License Available for Free

December 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 AM - News by Jeff Gamet

Apple is working to make it easier for companies to take advantage of its Mini DisplayPort by offering specification licensing to developers at no cost. The miniature version of the standard DisplayPort connector is available on all of Apple's recent laptop models, but so far only the 24-inch LED Apple Display includes a matching plug.

Companies that plan on releasing Mini DisplayPort-compatible products will first need to obtain an evaluation license, and after evaluating the specification can get a license to design and distribute their devices.

Opening the specification to developers means that other companies can make Mini DisplayPort products without dealing with expensive licensing costs, potentially speeding up adoption of the specification.

Companies interested in Mini DisplayPort specification licensing can check out Apple's Developer Web site.
