Apple’s MobileMe Already Fading

| News

Apple has already updated its MobileMe page to reflect its eventual demise. Customers are advised that MobileMe is no longer accepting new subscribers.

Current members will still be able to access everything through June 30, 2012 and are re-directed to a login page.

Apple has also published a knowledge base article with information about MobileMe box and subscription refunds and cancellations. Another KB covers the transition process.

They’ve given us all a free year of MobileMe, but no indication on what the cost will be after that to maintain our 20GB of storage, when iCloud only gives you 5 for free.

No mention of the web hosting service either. I’d really rather not have to move my site.

I’m happy with free. My subscription was due to renew next week. I was considering not renewing. I’m just tired of the “on-my-mac”, “MyName@me.com” , “MobileMe” Notes and ToDos confusion.  For example, I can see ToDos on my iPod Classic but not on my iPhone3G. I won’t even start to talk about calendars!

I can’t wait to migrate to iCrowd in the fall - I really do hope “it just works” - of course I’ll need a new phone - and the old one isn’t yet 3 years old. Pity.

I can’t see why web.me.com can’t be attached to a new iCloud account.
Same goes for MobileMe Gallery - I hope!!

Though I do worry about the stagnating iWeb app.

I can find no info at Apple.com about web hosting on iCloud. There are a lot of unanswered questions, hopefully Apple will clear things up over the next few days.

Anyone have any idea about what will happen to our .me or .mac email accounts?

Yeah, we have a family account and use our .me email addresses for FaceTime as well as synching.

Nancy:  e-mail and web hosting are issues hot on everyone’s mind.  We’ll be sorting that out the rest of the week!

Note the fine print…  free usage (or any usage?) or the new MobileMe / iCloud ONLY for   OS5 and Lion users.

So they are trying also to force current users to upgrade.

I’ll note I just got a notice saying that my Family Pack would be recharged in July, which is interesting since their site also says it’s not free for existing users…

>If you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

>Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users.

MobileMe is dead - long live iTools!

Er, iCloud.

Al Dunstan

i must be the biggest schmuck in the world.

My MobileMe account was charged yesterday to renew my subscription. I contacted Apple Support and was told there was nothing I could do except cancel my account to get a refund.

What would have been fair was for them to charge me a pro-rated amount of 28 CENTS for the one day of MobileMe.

I have been a loyal user/evangelical for Apple since 1985 (512K). I have owned over 10 Macs/Laptops in this time. I sold Apple computers in the 1990s when every other person was asking when Apple was going out of business.

This is a really s….y thing they are doing.

On a somewhat more obscure feature, will Back to My Mac work with iCloud?  I love the feature and think it’s one of the unsung heroes of MobileMe, and would not want to see it go away.  Given its low requirements, it shouldn’t be a big deal to include it as part of the free iCloud features.

I’m pretty sure Jobs mentioned @me.com email addresses as part of iCloud, so I think those will transfer over just fine.

@Al Dunstan: I heard reports of people getting recent renewals refunded.  John’s article includes the link to a KB page on the cancel->refund path, which is what it sounds like Apple Support told you.

Maybe you somehow fell through the cracks, just too late for the automatic refund so the only option is cancel to get a refund?

Marcus

Can you also find out what happens to alias email accounts.  These are very important to me.

This isn’t definitive stuff, but it reflects user concerns.

Wow, it does look like Apple has given up on the idea of making it easy for people to make their own web sites. Of course, most normal people just upload stuff to Facebook, etc., but it’s a bit sad for this to die when, for many years, starting with Claris Home Page and iTools, moving to iWeb, .mac and MobileMe, Apple did make it easy to make real, custom web sites which aren’t merely content hosted on some service like Facebook or Youtube.

Web sharing (i.e. Apache) is still part of Snow Leopard, for the moment - I wonder if Lion will move it from the regular OS into Lion Server only?

After reading Facebook’s terms of service and how users give them license to use photos and graphics that they post I have started putting things on my own website and linking to them from my Facebook Wall. Not that I am an Ansel Adams or Man Ray though I do aspire to be one before I expire. I tried iWeb, but prefer DreamWeaver and I am coding mostly by hand. However, we will need to learn more about iCloud before writing off it hosting websites.
