The iPhone 4S launch seems to be working out well for AT&T with the cell service provider saying it had activated more than a million of the new combination iPods and smartphones as of Tuesday. The company also said the iPhone 4S launch was the most successful for AT&T to date.

Apple launched the iPhone 4S on Friday, October 14, and the following Monday announced that it had already sold over 4 million units. Apple also ran through a million iPhone 4S units during the first 24 hours of pre-sale orders.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S during a media event earlier this month. The new model uses the same body design as the iPhone 4, but includes a dual core A5 processor, a new antenna design, better battery life, built-in combination GSM and CDMA cell network support, an 8 megapixel camera, Siri voice control, and more.
Apple has since started limiting in-store iPhone 4S purchases to reservations only, and online sales are showing up to a two-week wait time.
AT&T also said that it activated 2.7 million iPhones during its September quarter.

I pre-ordered mine on 10/8, Sat. morning, and it still hasn’t shipped yet, so, yeah, demand must be very strong. I have to admit I didn’t think it would be like this, given some of the ho-hum attitudes out there, but I think a lot of that came from iPhone 4 owners who rightly saw this as more of an incremental upgrade, except for Siri.
However, for people like me who still own an iPhone 3G or 3GS (mine is a 3G; I gave my wife my upgrade last year so she could get an iPhone), I can’t wait for the 4S. I think many pundits overlooked us.
Ordered 2 of them Saturday afternoon. This morning I checked the status page and they have not yet shipped.
Quite possibly. I was hoping for an iPhone 5, but the 4s fills the bill to replace our 3G iPhones.
Wait, what?
4 million sold
-1 million activated by ATT
==========================
3 million sold by Verizon and Sprint combined?
Does it seem likely that VZ and Sprint beat ATT? I wouldn’t have thought so, judging by the lines.
The 1 million number of activations may not include those iPhones sold, but not yet shipped.
