BBC iPlayer Subscription Goes International This Year

BBC Director General Mark Thompson confirmed on Wednesday that the broadcaster’s iPlayer service will finally make the move beyond U.K. borders sometime in 2011, and will come with a monthly subscription fee below US$10.

Mr. Thompson made the announcement during the Financial Times’ Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference on Wednesday, according to TNW. The service that gives viewers access to BBC TV and radio content online will cost subsctibers “A few dollars a month – less than $10,” he said.

There aren’t many details available about iPlayer support outside of the U.K. yet, but early reports hint that the service will initially be available only to iPad owners.

Excellent news! BTW, there’s a pretty decent sci-fi miniseries (I guess it could become a multi-season show) on BBC1 right now called “Outcasts.” Episode 7 (of 8) airs on Sunday.
