Bungie’s classic first person shooter game for the Mac, Marathon, found its way to the iPad on Thursday. Like the original, players run through the Marathon spaceship blasting away the alien Pfhor with guns, missiles and bombs.
Marathon was originally released for the Mac in 1994 and quickly became wildly popular thanks to its graphics and intelligent (for the time) enemies. The game has since been ported to Mac OS X, and now has a new lease on life thanks to the efforts of Soli Deo Gloria Productions and Daniel Blezek.
Marathon for the iPad
Marathon for the iPad includes 27 levels across six chapters, Pfhor and Bobs, and the original game’s weapons such as the Mega Class pistol, assault rifle and grenade launcher, fusion pistol and flame thrower. The game also offers in-app purchases for HD Mode with higher quality graphics, and Master Chief Mode with infinite ammo and invulnerability, all weapons, instant save and recharge, and the ability to start on any level.
Marathon for the iPad is free and is available at Apple’s iTunes-based App Store. HD Mode is a US$3.99 in-app purchase, and Master Chief Mode costs $0.99 in-app.

Great, but is there a multiplayer mode?
If I 1) actually owned an iPad, and 2) Hadn’t already recently played through all three Marathon titles, via the Aleph One project (http://marathon.sourceforge.net/), I would SO be all over this. If/when I do get an iPad, this will still probably be the first new app I purchase. Frog blast the vent core!!! Watch out for the Bobs!
I downloaded the app to my iPad this morning. I’m expecting my battery to have a serious workout very soon.
Sweet!
One question: The app is free but it has two inApp purchase options. I assume HD Mode is better graphics, but does anyone know what Master Chef Mode is? I checked the marathonforios site and iTunes and while both mention Master Chef Mode I didn’t find any description of it.
Never mind me. I’m a duplicate post.
Master Chef mode? Maybe that gives you some cool knives to slash Phor with and an armored apron?
Pfhor souffle?

So it’s something new. A free game with a built in pay for cheat codes option.
@geoduck
Master Chief Mode enables a variety of cheats that make the game easier (http://bit.ly/nqJ4Lg). Kids today are such sissies
Now we just need Myth and Oni on the iPad and you’ll never see me again.
I started a discussion here about what other games we’d like to see on the iPad.
I downloaded the Marathon 1 game for the iPad and tried to download the HD graphics as well. Now, all i can see when I start it up is an overlay that says “unable to connect to the iTunes Store”. I have tried reloading the game and re-syncing my iPad but the message keeps coming back so I can’t play the game. :(
I am having the same error “Cannot connect to iTunes store” with cancel button below. Cancel has no effect the message keeps popping back up.
