Dev-Team Jailbreaks iPhone OS 3.1

September 16th, 2009 at 8:30 AM - News by Jeff Gamet

Dev-Team, the group known for developing iPhone software hacks, released Pwnage Tool 3.1 on Tuesday. The new version of the utility lets iPhone and iPod touch 3.1 users jailbreak their device and install third party apps that aren't available through Apple's App Store.

Jailbreaking is a process that modifies the code in an iPhone or iPod touch so that applications Apple hasn't approved for distribution through the App Store can be installed and run on the device.

The release may be good news for older iPhone and iPod touch owners, but not so much for users with newer models. The hack is compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G and the original iPod touch. iPhone 3GS owners, along with second generation and September 9-release iPod touch owners are out of luck for now.

Using the hack includes a long list of warnings, so be careful if you decide to go down the jailbreak path.

Right now, only Mac users can use Pwnage Tool 3.1 since there will not be a Windows Pwnage tool.

Your best bet is to go with Custom firmware 3.1 for 2G and 3G iPhones. Click on my name/profile here to download custom firmware for Windows users.

iLikemyiPhone2, but I can not understand why anyone would need to jail break it. Sure if you live in some place like Grand Fenwick and the iPhone is not yet sold there then maybe you might want to break your iPhone. Otherwise can someone explain the need for the break?

Jailbreaking entitles you to do stuff which Apple and ATT hate!

For instance, Apple decided to block Google Voice from App Store, so jailbreak it and use it from Cydia!

iPhone looks lame with black background, use Winterboard for attractive themes!

There are numerous hacks.

Unlock is for other carriers, jailbreak is for maximum productivity! Visit my blog and click on jailbreak, customize, cydia categories for more insight into jailbreak stuff!

I will put them on my bucket list

I can not understand why anyone would need to jail break it.

While in an app, how many taps does it take you to turn on/off Wifi? Bluetooth? 3G? Airplane mode? Brightness? All of those take 2 taps *without leaving the current app* with an extension called SBSettings that can only be installed by jailbreaking.

The other guy also mentioned: GOOGLE VOICE!

I have an AT&T contract but no $30 data plan so I STILL NEED THE UNLOCK FOR MY 2G EVEN THOUGH I’M ON AT&T.

Apple has decided that for some reason 2G owners don’t deserve to have MMS. This can be enabled anyway, but only after jailbreaking.

Does your weather icon always say 73ยบ and sunny on the home screen? Mine actually tells me the temp/weather and also puts it in the status bar next to the battery level.

Want to try an app to make sure you would like it before you buy it? You can do that too, but only if you jailbreak.

Want a flashlight app that ACTUALLY turns the backlight brightness up to maximum while you use it? You guessed it, jailbreak wink

While we’re at it: Video for the iPhone 2G/3G looks pretty nice, but you have to jailbreak!

Want to speed up your iPhone by quitting apps like iPod and Safari (which don’t actually quit when you hit the home button) to free up memory? Jailbreak.

Want to download YouTube videos for later watching when you don’t have internet in the subway train, etc.? Jailbreak.

Want to keep a WiFi connection alive when you put your iPod Touch to sleep so you can receive push notifications without having to wake up the device? Jailbreak.

...and that just scratches the surface of what you can do to unlock the true potential of a great device that Apple, for who knows what ridiculous reasons, by Jailbreaking your device.

Yes, all those features are on my bucket list, but they are at the end of it.

Not everyone wants to use the AT&T network, some people like regional carriers like i-wireless.

Not everyone wants to use the AT&T network, some people like regional carriers like i-wireless.

I am sure that after seeing how successful it was on AT&T network that other carriers, regional and national, would like to have a share of the iPhone market.

I wasn’t talking about carriers wanting it, I was talking about consumers who purchase an iPhone, not wanting to be on the AT&T network.
