Apple launched a European iPhone charger adapter replacement program on Friday after finding that the device could dangerously overheat. The company isn't saying the charger adapters pose a fire threat, but did say it is a "safety risk."

The problem adapters shipped between October 2009 and September 2012 with European versions of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and were also available for sale as an accessory. iPhone owners can check for model number A1300 near the connector prongs to see if they have a defective adapter. Model number A1400 is fine and doesn't need to be replaced.
iPhone owners how have an affected charger adapter can exchange it at Apple's own retail stores as well as through Apple tech support, or at some authorized resellers. Users that have already purchased replacement parts can request a refund. Apple also has a webpage detailing the issue with instructions for replacing defective adapters.
