Apple released MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7 on Tuesday to address an issue that could cause certain laptop models to unexpectedly shut down if the built-in battery has more than 1,000 charge cycles.

The firmware update for the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro from mid 2010 and early 2011 addressed what Apple called a rare issue where the laptop could stop working or shut down without warning after battery 1,000 charge cycles have been reached.

The update is free and available through the OS X's Software Update feature, or as a downloadable installer at the Apple Support website.
