Unity Technologies announced this week at the Unite Conference that its game development platform Unity is now free for independent developers. The software was previously known as Unity Indie and sold for US$199; Unity Pro continues to cost $1,499 per license.

Unity enables game makers to deploy titles to Mac, PC, iPhone, Nintendo Wii, and the Web. Version 2.6, which was also announced this week, offers a wide variety of improvements, including performance optimizations, the ability to animate anything, built-in search with live-updated results, and more.
