Garmin announced on Tuesday that it is purchasing Navigon and will operate the navigation software company as a wholly owned subsidiary. Garmin is known for its GPS products, and Navigon for its popular turn-by-turn navigation app for the iPhone.

“With Navigon, we are also acquiring one of the top-selling navigation applications for the iPhone and Android platforms — something that we expect will help drive revenue for the combined company going forward,” commented Garmin COO and president, Cliff Pemble.

In addition to getting its hands on Navigon’s iPhone navigation app, the deal also gives Garmin a stronger presence in Europe.

Navigon currently offers several turn-by-turn navigation apps for the iPhone and iPad through Apple’s iTunes-based App Store. The company’s iOS products include navigation apps for the U.S. and Canada, Europe, and region-limited options for users that need maps and directions for smaller areas.

Garmin didn’t say how much it is paying to take over Navigon.
