Hackers Find iOS 4.1 Jailbreak

| News

iOS 4.1 is less than a day old, and the iPhone Dev Team has already found an exploit they can use in a new jailbreak utility. The hack isn’t available yet, but coders are already working on the project.

Jailbreaking is the process of hacking your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad so apps that aren’t available through Apple’s App Store can be installed. Apple doesn’t approve of jailbreaking or support jailbroken devices.

The latest exploit hackers have found takes advantage of bootrom code, and apparently works with devices that have been updated to iOS 4.1.

The group isn’t saying yet when users can expect to new jailbreak tools to be available.

So I am still trying to figure out - if I were to jailbreak my iPhone 4 (when the jailbreak is available), would I be able to return it to an Apple approved state should I need to take the phone in for service?

@noob: That’s a question that every jailbreaker asks, and one that is usually answered in the jailbreak app, wherever it materializes.

The funny thing about exploits and jailbreaking is that Apple, with it’s exclusive distribution via App Store, has created a stronger incentive for people to find exploits on iOS than there ever was on Windows. Over there, the incentive is to phish or scam or wreak havoc. On iOS, it’s to actually be able to let millions of users do useful things that Mother Steve won’t allow. Oh, and of course, a nice side effect is that those exploits can be used for the traditional bad purposes too.

Apple has an intractable problem on its hand trying to write a system that large with no exploits. All the magic in the world won’t solve that for them. But managing the incentive space would mitigate these significantly.

Yes, do a restore and all is good. No worries.

Given IPhone 4, Ipad 3G/Wifi with latest Software updates already installed.

IF I use Jailbrake, will I still be able to use ITunes?
Will I be able to Sync up, Backup/update my Iphone a & apps, even with Cydia or other non ITUNES/App Store apps installed?

Will Apple know?

If I use Tether software (MyWi or others like it), will Apple or AT&T know I’m tethering my notebook or IPad to the Phone?

If I Jailbrake my Iphone, to load up MyWi, do I also have to jailbrake an IPAD to tether it to the Iphone? Or will just bluetooth or WiFi work?

Assumes Iphone 4, Ipad 3G/Wifi with latest software updates installed.

Thanks
