iPhone 6s, 6s Plus Sales Top 13M During Launch Weekend

Apple broke its iPhone launch weekend sales yet again, this time hitting 13 million units with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. That easily tops last year's 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch weekend sales.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history."

This year's iPhone launch included Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the U.K., and the United States, along with one country that wasn't part of last year's initial rollout: China.

The new iPhone models look like last year's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but include big upgrades on the inside. The new iPhone models sport Apple's custom designed A9 processor, 12 megapixel rear-facing and 5 megapixel front-facing cameras, better Touch ID performance, 2 GB RAM instead of 1 GB, support for more cell radio frequencies, 3D Touch, and more.

Apple said the new iPhone models will be available in 40 more countries on October 9: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan. On October 10, countries include Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

India, Malaysia, and Turkey will get the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus on Friday, October 16. The list of countries will expand to 130 by the end of the year.

Apple's launch weekend sales may be record breaking, but they won't all show up at the same time in the company's quarterly earnings reports. Sales Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th will be included in Apple's October report, and Sunday the 27th will appear in next January's report.
