Leaked Documents Show Low iPad Inventories for Best Buy

Apple’s iPad will be available at the company’s own retail locations on April 3 along with Best Buy locations around the U.S., but don’t expect to see many units in Best Buy stores on launch day. Leaked documents detailing Best Buy’s iPad launch day plans show the company will get only about 15 units per store, or about five of each Wi-Fi only model, according to Engadget.

The leaked plans show Best Buy locations with Apple store-in-a-store displays will receive their launch day iPad allotments on April 2nd, just in time for the April 3rd launch. It also shows the in-store displays, and also shows that the stores will be selling several iPad accessories.

Apple introduced the iPad at a special media event in January, and launched pre-sales on March 12. The iPad is a multimedia tablet and ebook reader with a 9.7-inch multitouch display, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, support for most iPhone applications, and optional 3G wireless data access in some models. The 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi only models will be available on April 3, and the Wi-Fi plus 3G models will ship near the end of the month.

The delivery date for pre-orders moved from April 3 to April 12 for orders placed after March 26, so anyone hoping to get their hands on an iPad on launch day that hasn’t already ordered one will have to stand in line. Since Best Buy locations will have at least a few units on hand, shoppers will be able to choose between standing in line at the big box retailer and Apple’s own stores next Saturday.
