MacBook SMC Firmware Update Addresses Charging Issues

· by · News

Apple released MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4 late on Thursday to address charging-related problems on MacBook and MacBook Pro models manufactured in 2007 and 2008 when using new power adapters.

New MagSafe chargers and old MacBook don’t always mix.

According to Apple, “In certain situations when you connect a new 60W or 85W MagSafe power adapter to the MagSafe port of an older MacBook or MacBook Pro computer, the adapter may not charge the computer and the LED indicator light on the MagSafe connector of the adapter may not illuminate.”

The update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or 10.6.4, and will cause your laptop’s fans to run at full speed while installing. Fan performance will return to normal after the installation completes.

MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4 is available via the Software Update application, or as a downloadable installer at the Apple Support Web site.

I thought I was crazy when my new charger didn’t work for me. For some reason resetting the SMC then plugging it in seemed to work though, but this is even better.
