iPad users who install the most recent update (as of Nov. 8, 2010) of the Maxim HD app were surprised to find that the October issue, free in the previous update, was no longer so, but cost US$3.99. The update allowed users to access multiple issues of the male-centric magazine, a feature not available in the previous update.
Surprised updaters miffed over the missing free issue, began giving the Maxim app a string of 1-star reviews in the Apps Store.
The Mac Observer contacted Bite Sized Candy, the developer of the Maxim HD app, to find out what happened. Pare Markowitz, co-founder of Bite Sized Candy, gave us this reply, “We had to replace the single app with multi-issue. We are trying by the end of the week to make the October issue free again.”
The Mac Observer also asked if the iPad app would support subscriptions. “We are planning on subscriptions eventually—trying to find the best solution for it,” Ms. Markowitz replied.
As promised, eager Maxim readers can now download the October issue for free. The November issue is listed for US$3.99.
