Moto to UK: Don’t Queue for iPad 2, Buy a Xoom

| News

XoomMotorola has taken the impending launch of the iPad 2 in the UK market to have a little fun with Apple fans waiting to get one by suggesting that they not waste a spate of fine weather by queueing up to get one. Instead, they can spend their time in a local pub after putting in an online order for a Xoom.

In a statement covered by TechRadar, Moto’s UK marketing team said, “Not keen to waste the finest weather we’ve had in ages waiting in a queue? Idea of surviving overnight on mundane take-away with some frankly questionable queue buddies leave you cold? Fear not friends, ditch the winter coat, head out for a pint and pre-order your Motorola Xoom online instead!”

iPad 2 goes on sale in the UK Friday, March 25th, at 5:00 PM local. The device also goes on sale in 24 other markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Of course, the Xoom WiFi model is still available only as a pre-order, so if you’re heading to that pub to wait for your Xoom, you may want to take a sleeping bag. For those interested, we have also posted the specs for iPad, iPad 2, and Xoom for comparison.

I’d be careful around GSM/European Motorola Android devices, look at the milestone (GSM droid) it still hasn’t received 2.2 froyo update.

(guess no EU carrier was interested in pushing the update like Verizon)

If you were standing in line to purchase a personal helicopter, would someone’s suggestion for you to purchase an automobile as an alternative really appeal to you?

People accuse Apple and their devoted fans of living in a Reality Distortion Field but, please! It’s pretty clear that Motorola needs a reality check when it comes to why people will stand in line to buy Apple products.

Offer a few free drink vouchers with that Xoom and I might reconsider. wink

Seriously, I hope European pubs are more civilized than American bars.  Why take your new device where it can get spilled on, barfed on, stolen, or broken in a fight?

I suppose that there are plenty of Xooms in stock. If not then I would think that they too would have component supply problems due to the disaster in Japan.

Rumour has it that Moto is developing its own OS as an alternative to Android’s Honeypot due to Oracle’s patent and copyright suits against Google’s mobile OS it filched from Java ME. Looks like it’s Android based eXoom may likely be an orphan in dirty diapers which means no further updates or support. And, to boot, being that it is not yet complete, something to avoid.

The pub sound like a good idea to celebrate one’s recent purchase of an iPad toodle-oo.

Now how many nervous tablet desperado designers does that make, sprouting their own homegrown or store bought mobile OSs. HP, RiM, Moto, all with iOS showing them the way into the future via Apple’s past and present.

Such efforts could be the genesis of a good opera, or soap opera more ‘n likely.

Now we need some spiel to set us straight.

Hmm, to quote one of my favorite trolls here, it appears the Xoom is already fast becoming “irrelevant”...

I so can’t wait to see some sales figures in a month or two…  Actual end user sales figures, not pipeline-filling sales figures.

well that was because they had their own skinned UI over it,
this is a fresh clean “unmolested” copy of google android 3.0 and the biggest selling point of that is you get your updates 1st

So they want people to wait out of line, to buy an inferior product?

Hello!  McFly!!!

I have a 3g pre ordered from Carphone Warehouse. A guy rang me today from CW to tell me that he had spoken to Motorola and the release date for all versions globally (except USA) is the 19th April. He said this is official
