A software update for the Apple TV looks to be just around the corner based on updated iTunes Store terms of service. The changes make reference to Apple TV software version 3.0, which isn't yet available.
The Apple TV software update apparently will add support for the new iTunes LP format and iTunes Extras. iTunes LP is Apple's new multimedia bundle that includes special videos, liner notes and more with select albums. iTunes Extras are special features and extra content that's includes with certain movies.
The terms also clarify when iTunes movie rentals can be moved between devices.
The new terms and conditions can be seen by purchasing music, movies or applications at the iTunes Store.
Apple hasn't said when Apple TV 3.0 will be released, but it can't be too far off now that it's referenced in the updated iTunes Store terms and conditions.
[Thanks to TUAW for the heads up.]

Bring on the 3.0 update! I’ve felt iTunes LP has been hobbled without Apple TV support.
