News Corp Launches The Daily for iPad

| Product News

News Corp officially launched The Daily on Wednesday at a special media event in New York City. The Daily is an iPad-exclusive daily news publication that includes multimedia content, Twitter and Facebook sharing, and more.

News Corp’s The Daily

Subscribers will be able to view three dimensional photos in articles, view inline videos, listen to related audio, post text and audio comments for articles, save articles for later reading, and display customizable sports and weather feeds. New content will be published every day, and breaking news updates will be published throughout the day as necessary.

Issues cost US$0.14 a day, or $40 a year — which breaks down to $0.11 a day. That $40 a year subscription comes courtesy of a new subscription feature Apple introduced just for The Daily launch.

According to Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, Eddie Cue, the new subscription feature will be available to other publishers, but he wasn’t ready to say when that would happen.

The Daily app requires an iPad and is available as a free download at Apple’s iTunes-based App Store now.

Really slick. It shows what they can do if they ‘get’ the tablet idea. It’s not just a place for pdf images of the regular publication. The iPad app is not just an afterthought, a perk for those that get the dead tree version. Clickable links, moving graphics, metadata, this is what you get when someone really wants to utilize the capabilities of a pad that’s on-line all the time. I’d subscribe…

...or at least I would if it weren’t Murdoch. I’ll wait for an app from from a respectable journalistic organization.

Grit?

I am anxious to see The Daily to see just how fair and balanced it may be. I am also anxious to get an iPad, but I am waiting for the next model.

Other news services and magazines will probably get on board with a similar product.

Don’t forget to burn any books you may have that were published by HarperCollins while you’re arguing ad hominem.

+2 with slight edit: I’ll wait for an app from a journalistic publication I respect
