Other World Computing Releases Two Additional “Mercury” SuperDrive Kits for 17” MacBook Pro

Other World Computing announced a new pair of "Mercury" SuperDrive internal Upgrade Kits for Apple's 17" MacBook Pro notebook computers on Tuesday. The new models, which are immediately available, read DVD+/-R/RW, Dual-Layer DVD, DVD-RAM, and CD-R/RW media and offer burn speeds up to 8X for DVDs and 24X for CDs.

The first kit, known as the OWC Mercury MacBook Pro 17" SuperDrive Dual-Layer Internal Drive Kit, offers burn speeds up to 8X for DVD-R, 6X for DVD-DL, 5X for DVD RAM and 24X for CD-ROM. The drive retails for $89.99 and includes a 1 year OWC warranty.

The second kit, known as the OWC Mercury MacBook Pro 17" SuperDrive Dual-Layer Internal Drive Kit (with media and software), offers burn speeds up to 8X for DVD-R, 6X for DVD-DL, 5X for DVD RAM and 24X for CD-ROM. The drive includes 10 pieces of 8X DVD-R media in a jewel case, copies of EMC Retrospect backup software, NTI DragonBurn CD/DVD authoring software, a 1 year OWC warranty and retails for $104.99.

Users looking to install the drives will find printed instructions included with the kits as well as tutorial videos available on the OWC web site.

Too bad they’re not releasing RAM compatible with 13” MacBooks. That’s what we’re really waiting for. At least those of us caught in the “it’s the RAM, “no, it’s the computer” showdown between Apple and 3rd party RAM vendors.
