OWC Axes Axiotron Modbook Prices by $500

TMO Talk (4)

Other World Computing dropped the prices for the Axiotron Modbook by US$500 on Tuesday, substantially lowering the cost for the Mac OS X tablet computer. Pricing for a Modbook now starts at $1,599, and the base price for converting user-supplied MacBooks into tablets was dropped to $649.99, too.

The Axiotron Modbook

The entry level Modbook starts life as Core 2 Duo MacBook, but is disassembled and rebuilt as a tablet-format computer. It includes a 2.13GHz processor, 2GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 8x SuperDrive, iSight camera, AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, a 13.3-inch Wacom Penabled touch sensitive display with stylus, and Mac OS X 10.6. The MacBook's ports are retained, too, including FireWire, USB, mini-DVI, Gigabit Ethernet, and audio jacks.

The Modbook also includes a built-in WAAS-enabled GPS.

Converting user-supplied MacBooks into a Modbook start at $649.99, including FedEx shipping.

Modbooks and Modbook conversions are available at the Mac Sales Web site.

That thing is so dope. If I win the lottery this month, I will buy all the regulars on TMO a Modbook. Too bad Psystar doesn’t make one.

OK, this is the very first bit of news that makes me think that an Apple tablet is even possible. Up until now, I’ve considered every rumor nothing more than fevered imagination, but here is a company that will be in direct competition with any Apple product, lowering their prices…. why? I wonder if they have any sort of inside information. BTW, at this price, I’m now considering one of these guys. We’ll see what the next few months reveals…

K, this is the very first bit of news that makes me think that an Apple tablet is even possible. Indeed. Inside info and/or the fact that today’s SL update no longer supports Atom processors- another sign that the long awaited tablet has finally gotten the green light.

I dunno about the Atom processor bit. I mean, Apple probably isn’t too happy at all of us buying MSI Winds or eeePCs to run their OS on. smile You don’t need a tablet to explain that one. big grin Plus, from what I’ve been reading, it isn’t that big of a deal to work around, but I don’t want to touch Snow Leopard yet in any case. I need my computer to be rock-solid and to work with my older printers. I don’t need to seek out new updates to software or drivers. My friends have gone through enough to suit me.
