Quark announced the immediate availability of QuarkXPress 9.1 on Thursday. The update for the professional page layout application for the Mac added App Studio for building iPad magazine apps and individual magazine issues.
QuarkXPress 9 for the Mac
App Studio helps designers create branded magazine apps for the iPad, manages App Store distribution, and builds magazine issues to push to iPad apps. Previously, users had to rely on the company’s Web-based app building and publication service, but this new update rolls those features into QuarkXPress.
Quark released QuarkXPress 9 earlier this year without App Studio bundled in-app, but with the promise that it would be added soon through an update. The feature was first introduced as an online service for QuarkXPress 8.5 users.
Designers building magazine apps with QuarkXPress will need to purchase a US$149 app template license, along with a $349 single issue publishing license pack. They also need to be a member of Apple’s iOS Developer Program, which adds another $99 to the total package cost.
QuarkXPress 9.1 is available as a free upgrade for version 9 users, and can be downloaded at the Quark Web site.
