RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser Steps Down

· by · News

RealNetworks founder Rob Glaser gave up his role as CEO on Wednesday, but plans to stay with his company as chairman of the board of directors. Mr. Glaser will be replaced -- at least temporarily -- by Robert Kimball, who is also joining the board of directors.

RealNetworks is known for its RealPlayer products and online subscription media service.

"Our board has great confidence in Bob, and he will be a candidate for the permanent CEO position as part of a formal search process that will begin soon," Mr. Glaser said.

Despite his role as temporary CEO, Mr. Kimball is already talking like the job is permanently his. "We plan to transform Real into a more focused and more profitable company that delivers value to our shareholders," he said.

RealNetworks has attempted to compete with Apple's iTunes Store, but so far hasn't been able to make a dent in the Cupertino-based company's marketshare.
