Apple Adds ‘Hey, Siri’ Voice Command to Activate Siri in Cars

| WWDC

Apple's announced several new features for Siri during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address on Monday, including the ability to activate the service by just saying, "Hey, Siri." The feature is similar to Google's "OK Google" command in Android and Glass, and works when your device is pared with your car.

The feature is part of iOS 8, which is scheduled for release this fall. Other new Siri features in iOS include Shazam integration, streaming voice recognition for real-time voice-to-text, and support for 22 new languages.

It sounded like this mode is only available in a car. At least that is the example he gave. Does anyone know if it would work with the device sitting on a desk or something? My car does not have any fancy bluetooth support, so I would not be able to use this feature otherwise.

At 80:55 Craig said “...if you take your phone and plug it on, for instance in the car….”

I take that to mean you just need external power and he was just using the car as an example. Nowhere did he say it needs pairing. No battery drain like is claimed with Google Now I guess.

We need to wait for the details on how this will work. Battery drainage would be a concern, but if they can lick that problem and works with the iPhone plugged in or not then that would be even more “handy”.

Why would it not? Siri doesn’t know if it’s sitting in a car or on your sofa.

iJack, if your speed is 60 mph, you’re probably in the car ! I never seen a sofa in that speed.

Siri doesn’t know if it’s sitting in a car or on your
sofa.

She does if you have nag mode enabled

“Hey Siri, what is the weather like?”

Get up off your butt, step out side and take a look, take the trash to the curb when you do.

“Hey Siri, what is the traffic like ahead?”

The usual in this part of town. Why are you not wearing your seatbelt? Put that burrito down and drive with both hands.

Seriously though, via the accelerometers Siri could probably tell if you are moving or still.

In iOS 7, I can ask for, and get Siri voice directions to a location, while I am sitting on my sofa. Ditto for “time,” “temperature” and “nearest gas station.” Are you suggesting “Hey, Siri” in iOS 8 would hobble that unless I am sitting in a moving car?
