TextWrangler 4 Gains More BBEdit Features

Bare Bones Software announced the immediate availability of TextWrangler 4.0 on Tuesday. The new version of the text and code editing application for the Mac gained new editing features that match BBEdit 10, along with BBEdit’s updated preferences interface.

Version 4.0 now includes the Find and Multi-Find features introduced in BBEdit 9, replaced the Document Drawer with BBEdit 10’s Document Bar, gained a new disk browser view, and switchable colors themes for code syntax. It also added Lion full-screen support, the ability to resize windows by dragging window edges, Verilog and VHDL support, and more.

Just like previous versions of TextWrangler, markup tools and live preview aren’t available — those features are still limited to its big brother BBEdit, a US$49.99 app available through the Mac App Store and the Bare Bones website.

TextWrangler 4.0 dropped support for PowerPC-based Macs, and requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. Bare Bones Software CEO Rich Siegel told The Mac Observer that cutting support for older Macs and older versions of OS X let his crew improve overall performance.

TextWrangler 4.0 is free and available for download at the Bare Bones Software website.
