Apple may be rumored to have a TV set in the works, but its Apple TV set-top box “is still classified as a hobby,” CEO Tim Cook said during the company’s Tuesday earnings call. Mr. Cook made that categorization based on the revenue generated by the 2.8 million units sold during Apple’s previous fiscal year, which concluded last September.
However, Mr. Cook did note that Apple set a new quarterly record for Apple TV sales during 4Q11 with 1.4 million units sold. (The December quarter is the first of Apple’s fiscal year.)
He added: “We continue to add things to it. And if you’re using the latest one, I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t live without it. And so I think it is a fantastic product and we continue to pull the strings to see where it takes us. But other than that, I don’t have any comments.”
