Westboro Church Plans Picket of Steve Jobs’s Funeral

| News

Westboro Church announced Wednesday that it plans to picket Steve Jobs’s funeral as part of its anti-gay crusade. For added chutzpah and irony, Margie Phelps, the daughter of church founder Fred Phelps, made the announcement via Twitter on an iPhone.

“Westboro will picket his funeral,” Ms. Phelps tweeted. “He had a huge platform; gave God no glory & taught sin. MT @AP: Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has died at 56.”

Margie Phelps Tweet

The tiny activist church has made many a mainstream headline by picketing the funerals of soldiers and celebrities, alike. The group has a radical anti-gay, anti-U.S., anti-Jew, and anti-reality message, and it regularly preaches that “God hates fags.”

Church members have now seized on the death of technology icon Steve Jobs to further promote its message. Tweeting from the group’s official “WCB Tachmonite” account, the church said, “My favorite part of using an iPhone to tweet that #stevejobs is in hell is when it results in international media coverage of our message.”

Another family member, Shirley Phelps-Rogers, added, “Steve Jobs did NOT create anything-God used Steve Jobs to create amazing STUFF for WBC to preach like a mug! Jobs vainly imagined HE did it!”

Westboro Church is comprised almost entirely of Phelps family members, and it is based in Topeka, Kansas. It remains to be seen what kind of reception they will receive at the site of Steve Jobs’s funeral service.

Anyone else notice they posted that twitter comment with an iPhone??

Hypocritical A-holes!

I mentioned that in the opening paragraph. smile

I’m really not thrilled that these folks call themselves “Baptsts”. I go to a Baptist church where our pastor actually quoted Steve Jobs in a sermon a few weeks ago.

My favorite reaction to a Westboro picket was the one at San Diego ComicCon a few years ago. Hundreds of Comic Con attendees showed up along side the Westboro folks with satirical signs saying things like “God Hates Jedi” or “All Glory to the Hypnotoad.” Pictures.

Jokes on them

I suspect that Jobs funeral will be as private as his life was and the family has the resources to make sure they are nowhere near, unlike the poor soldiers families.

If you are religious (which I am not) and have read the Bible (which I however, have) you know that hypocrites are held in very low esteem in Christian Theology. Also damned are Pharisees and other people who take on the holier than thou attitude and use it to hurt others. Dante said there’s a particular circle of hell waiting just for them.

Let’s hope someone has an Apple pie handy for them a la Anita Bryant

Lee Dronick

If it happens it may backfire on them, it may be the straw that broke the camel’s back in allowing this practice to continue.

The sand in Fred Phelps’ hourglass is rapidly running out and soon he will have some ‘splaining to do. He will be standing alone before a Judge who doesn’t recognize him as a lawyer and doesn’t care about the 1st Amendment.

That’s awesome. Thanks, ilikemac.

I believe there will be a large number of people who want to attend a public service of some sort, and that they will be accommodated, one way or another.

Very true, but I would not be surprised in this day and age if there isn’t some sort of “security scans” at the door. I mean the cream of high-tech industry will likely be there. Don’t want to risk someone bringing in a bomb or a gun, or a bullhorn, or a sign, or anything like that. Also I’m sure there will be ample security and if anyone tries to do anything during the service they will be swiftly spirited away.

OTOH if they are on the street across the corner nobody will pay them any attention.

Lastly, do we know if SJ will be cremated? If so there would not be a grave or internment or anything like that for the wack-jobs to try to disrupt.

MyRightEye

I’m pretty sure that Steve died a few days actually. I am thinking Monday. Nothing to go on, just a feeling.

They are the funeral equivalent of blog trolls. If the media wouldn’t pay them any attention they would either go away or do something so outrageous that they could find themselves in criminal court.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was cremated. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if there was memorial, if not a grave, at the either the existing Apple Campus or at the Spaceship one being built across the street.

Respect Steve and his family.
His funeral is NO place for protest or debate.

And I say that as a conservative Christian.

Steve jobs taught sin? And what sin would that be? It’s not like Apple created Word, for Heaven’s sake. smile

Can everybody (and I mean that as in all people in existence) please stop paying attention to these insufferable asses already?

MaxHedrm

Of course he didn’t give their god any glory ... he was Buddhist.

Dave Hamilton

I?m pretty sure that Steve died a few days [ago] actually. I am thinking Monday. Nothing to go on, just a feeling.

The statements release by both Apple and his family said he passed at some point on Wednesday. Not sure why they would have reason to lie (or delay the announcement and risk it being leaked somewhere else first).

pawolverine

What these people are looking for is publicity. They all ready have received it in this and other similar articles. The best thing that could happen is that there would be no press coverage of their protest. It’s amazing how so few nothings can get so much coverage.

Terrin

I was going to point out the same.

“this is the most stupid thing ever i hope they all g2 hell ppl dieing is no reason to b ignorant ...”

These people (let’s give them benefit of the courtesy - to treat them with respect - that they don’t give others) have highly developed fear and loathing for any thing that is different from themselves. This is the reason they are screaming at everybody. They call fire and damnation down on any people that are different. They exhibit bigotry and act like all the fearful and small minded. They are doing the same sort of advertising that Osama Bin Laden was doing with the attack on 9/11. They are looking for more of their type of fear mongering people. We help them by being angry and making their message more widely spread.

Just putting my tin foil hat on:  so that his death won’t detract from the Oct 4 unveiling of iPhon 4S?  On the other hand, if he had died on Oct 3, the Oct 4 event would have been postponed, no doubt.

So my conclusion is that he died on the day that everyone claimed he died on.

skipaq

As a Christian with a very conservative background; I find it insulting that these people continue make any claim to be Christlike. Their methods are anything but Christian.

furbies

Maybe if we and the press just didn’t even talk about these nutters, their “press oxygen” will evaporate and they’ll just go away ?

And what does it say in the Bible about sin and casting the first stone ?

Nemo

Recently, the U.S. Supreme court held, and I think correctly, that, Westboro Church’s (Westboro) message and means of presenting it are protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, so that as long as Westboro’s members respect private property and don’t interfere with Jobs’ funeral service, they can make their vile, disrespectful, hateful protest.

But there is one institutions that can do much to defeat Westboro’s purpose, without dishonoring or desecrating Jobs’ funeral in any way.  That is the press.  The press should not only ignore Westboro, it should use all of the technical means available to edit Westboro out of view.  Without the press reporting on them and with no video or images of Westboro’s protest, Westboro will be defeated in its purpose of desecrating private funerals to obtain press coverage for its vile message.  I hope that editors in newsrooms everywhere will deprive Westboro of the press coverage that is its raison d’?tre by simply ignoring Westboro and editing its members right out of the coverage.  After all, Westboro has no First Amendment right to news coverage.

algr

Richard Dawkins preaches to the choir, but probably never actually convinced anyone to be an atheist.  Westboro truly makes people hate god.

I hope so. We need to let them know how we feel about it.

The problem with this is that the more extreme someone’s views are, the more likely they are to get press coverage. After all controversy sells papers / air time. And I doubt the likes of Mr Murdoch will ever walk away from a headline.

And yes I know, he was an Australian before he switched passports and became an American. Just so he could own even more media companies. Down here in Oz, we’re glad he’s your problem now.

If only the press could exercise some self restraint, and if they must report on the loonies, bury the story somewhere among the classified ads. Preferably near the “Ladies of the night” Ads.

See: http://www.electronista.com/articles/11/10/07/steve.jobs.to.be.memorialized.in.private.ceremony/

2 days after not three. I’m pretty sure he died the morning of the 4th, hence the “reserved” seat in the front row at the keynote.

geoduck

I just ran across this article
Sounds like Westboro won’t have time to get there, nor will others. They may have a more public memorial at a later date but the funeral will be as I suspected exceedingly private. It might even be over already.

ravedog

Hmm.? I wonder why the Westboro church is so tiny.

Because the unfortunate side-effect of inbreeding is that not many survive past birth.
