The Wall Street Journal is gearing up to offer iPad users single-issue in-app purchases without requiring a regular subscription. Currently, the iPad app offers limited WSJ content for free, or full access with a subscription.

Alisa Bowen of Dow Jones told paidContent the per-issue purchase option is part of the company’s “open house approach” to draw new readers in. Single issues will cost readers US$1.99 and will include just that day’s content. They’ll also have the option of paying for a full month for $18.

WSJ subscribers already get access to the publication’s digital content, and the Starbucks is offering the WSJ online for free to in-store customers as part of its Digital Network service.

For now, the WSJ single-issue option will be limited to iOS device users. The paper may, however, expand to Android OS devices if the new in-app purchase option proves popular.
