Coming in full, murdered-out black or pristine white, these new skin variations on the PLAY:1 make a visual statement. Depending upon your color and placement choices these new models will either be the centerpiece of the room or completely fade into invisibility, either of which may work quite well for you.

iTunes Screenshot with Backup Archive

If you've ever looked in iTunes > Preferences > Devices you've probably seen what appear to be duplicate backups of your various iDevices labeled with a date. These are archives that iTunes automatically creates, typically when you updated to new software or otherwise made a change that caused your iPhone to start anew. There are times, however, when it might be handy to create one of these at a point in time of your choosing, and we can show you how.

Apple Music - Or Some Streaming Service - Needs To Steal Discovery From Napster

9:38 AM, Jul. 3rd, 2015 · Dave Hamilton · Dave Hamilton's Blog

The successful streaming music service will master the process of discovery — that is helping its users discover new music to listen to. Apple is doing this by going to a tried and true method with a new take on the old-school radio station with Beats 1, but I think that’s only half of it.

To truly unlock discovery a service’s users need to be able to learn from each other. The world is full of stories where like-minded-yet-anonymous people have tipped one another to the next great band.

Apple’s new iTunes Terms & Conditions highlight Apple Music, Expose iCloud Music Library

iTunes gets new TOC for Apple Music

On Tuesday, June 30, 2015, Apple updated their iTunes Store Terms and Conditions just hours ahead of the iTunes Music launch. Anyone downloading apps or app updates from the iTunes Store will have to agree to this, as will anyone installing iOS 8.4, as well.

The big changes are the inclusion of a new section detailing Apple Music, with mention of "iCloud Music Library" that sounds eerily familiar to iTunes Match (though iTunes Match is still listed elsewhere). Apple Music will require iOS 8.4, iTunes 12.2 and Android 4.1. Additionally, Apple now (for good reason) has the right to use your playback information to report to licensors and pay royalties. This covers both the new Apple Music service as well as iTunes Match.

Skype for Mac Hotfix Released to fix Audio Selection Issues

11:21 AM, May. 29th, 2015 · Dave Hamilton · Product News

On Friday Microsoft released an update for Skype for Mac, version 7.8.390, that fixes the audio selection bug introduced earlier this week. In the new version Skype will again honor the audio device selections chosen in Skype > Preferences > Audio/Video. The prior version ignored these selections and defaulted everything to whatever was chosen in OS X's system preferences. Skype for Mac 7.8.390 is available using Skype's built-in update function or as a manual download from Skype. Kudos to the Skype team for engineering a quick fix!

Use AppleScript To Create a Custom Evernote PDF Menu Action

9:14 AM, May. 29th, 2015 · Dave Hamilton · How-To

As Mac Geek Gab listeners will know, we've recently altered our workflow and begun experimenting with using Evernote to prep and share agenda items for the podcast. One of the most common things for us to do is share the PDFs of each listener's question (often with our answers) and Evernote seemed like a perfect system for this. Automating the saving, naming and syncing of this process required some very simple AppleScript, and we'll show you how it's done.

Skype for Mac Update Ignores Its Own Audio Settings

12:56 PM, May. 27th, 2015 · Dave Hamilton · Product News

Skype released an update for their OS X client today, version 7.8.388, that includes a nasty bug: it now ignores whatever audio devices you have selected in Skype > Preferences > Audio/Video. It treats every one of those 3 drop-downs there as though you have selected "Same as System." This is bad news for some users.

ShowStoppers & MacTech Team Up for DevFocus at WWDC

6:09 PM, May. 26th, 2015 · Dave Hamilton · Dave Hamilton's Blog

ShowStoppers has long put on some of our favorite events at tradeshows (and beyond). They assemble great product and app creators, put them in a room where all the booths are roughly the same size (and not over-adorned with lights and glitz) and only allow media as attendees for a 2-to-4 hour event. Good news: this year it's happening for the first time at WWDC.

TMO Daily Observations 2015-05-22: Fingerprints to Google and Apple Watch Heartrate Monitoring

Daily Observations Podcast

Google wants to offer Android M users the convenience of Touch ID's fingerprint unlocking... will users want to offer Google their fingerprints? Also, do you care if Apple Watch checks your resting heart rate less than every ten minutes, because it seems like that's what's happening with this week's Watch OS update. Bryan and Dave talk through all of this today on TDO.
