iMac Aquariums

One day at work 3 years ago we had a G3 snow iMac that died. They asked me to take it out and throw it away because it was beyond repair. I couldn’t bear to throw it away so I just took it home figuring I could do something with it someday. A while later I came across a picture of an iMacquarium that someone had made and I knew I had found a use for my iMac friend who would have been on his way to the junkyard. Fast forward through a bunch of planning and design changes and I finally had a working iMacquarium. Everyone who saw it thought it was awesome and soon I was building them for family and friends.

The tank is by far the hardest and most expensive part to construct. A square tank would be no problem but my tank design was far from being square. It had to be as wide as the screen in the front and taper back to fit the shape of the iMac. I also had to curve the face of the tank to fit where the CRT monitor used to be to eliminate the gap that would be there if it were flat. I took my tank design to a local custom plastic manufacturer and asked them if they could build several tanks matching my design. When they said they could I knew I was going to be building a lot of aquariums.

I started collecting dead iMacs from local recyclers, invested in all of the materials and supplies I would need, and started building iMacquariums in my spare time. I designed a little website in iWeb (http://www.jakeharms.com) and soon I had my first iMacquarium sale to a man in Florida.

In the last 3 years I’ve built over 75 iMacquariums and shipped them all over the world. It’s a great feeling to take something that was on it’s way to be destroyed and transform it into something that will be admired in someones living room or office again.

For more information and pictures visit my iMacquarium Website. http://www.jakeharms.com

iPhone Programmer/Developer Needed

Hi, I am hoping this type post is allowed and in the correct forum.

Having said that, I need to find a contract programmer that currently has the time and expertise for an App I need developed ASAP.

Ideally, the candidate has written an iPhone App(s) currently available in the App Store.

The App I have in mind requires specific familiarity/expertise with the “audio” and “blue tooth” portions of the current SDK.

Please contact me via PM or email along with the best way to contact you.

This is a real and immediate request and will require an NDA.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

George

P.S. If anyone can recommend or point me to a specific company/website or individual they have worked with in the past. I would appreciate that too.

Here is the scoop:

I have a G4 with Tiger loaded on it and I want to hook it up to my TV and stereo as a media server. I already have the cables. FYI - HD is not something that I am after. I want to stream this all from a USB drive that I have shared using an APE and everything will be hard wired.

Without front row…..what is the best way to do this?

Just installed CS4 Production Premier (student edition)...it includes AE but AE didn’t install. When I got the original install window I selected custom and it wouldn’t let me check the box to install AE…did a full install and it still didn’t install it. Anyone have any idea?

I should add the other applications such as Photoshop installed perfectly and run fine.

My son (9 years old) has expressed some interest in learning how to program. While I have some programming experience, it’s quite dated (as in I started with Pascal on a Apple II+) and the closest I’ve come to programming in the last decade is Excel Macros or simple Applescripts.

Any suggestions on age appropriate ways to get him started?

Thanks

iMac for prosumer work?

My latest G4 just croaked, and I’m debating digging deep and buying a new system. While I have only owned and used towers, I just don’t think I can afford one now. I do lots of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Painter work; all for print publishing so it’s lots of big files. So I’m wondering if any designers out there are using the new iMac for pro work. I know I can get lots of external storage nowadays because firewire hard drives are so cheap, but I’m worried the RAM won’t keep up with the work and it won’t last as long as my towers have because of lack of upgrade options. Plus I have grown used to using 2 monitors, and I’m not sure the iMac’s video board (or ports) can handle that. Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks

Recommended podcast feed generator?

I’m looking for recommendations to create a feed for a podcast. After geeking out on looking at the XML tags, I realized that I need a solution that is (1) easy for me to use and also (2) usable by someone other than me.

I’ve tried podcastgen (long name = “Podcast Generator”) and have liked the fact that I can set it up on my own webserver and that it allows uploading and feed creation from a single, simple entry page. Also, it supports CSS and I hope to get into some customization to make the podcast page fit into the rest of the site.

Unfortunately, I can’t adjust the date when creating/editing items in podcastgen—which is a big deal because I have three months of almost daily recordings from a program and I would like some control over their dates.

Does anyone have either tips for adjusting the date in podcastgen or a similar program that they would recommend?

I’ve also looked at uploading the actual media files to one location and using a third-party website to create the XML feed. This adds more steps and would not be ideal. That said, if anyone has any favorites (specifically ones that facilitate changing the dates on feeds), please recommend.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.—I’m a noob to the forums, so please forgive my inability to have found this in a prior post if one exists. I searched for a few terms but couldn’t find anything already in the forums.
