Changing IP address without transmitting ARP collision detection packets

I need to change my IP address either through the command line or through a C API without having the ARP address collision detection packets being transmitted.

I have tried using ifconfig -arp which appears to compelte suiccesfully - no ARP packets are transmitted. However, other network utilies stop functioning. For example - I am unable to ping other machines.

I have also tried using the ipconfig command. While this does change the IP address without breaking other network functions such as ping - there does not appear to be a way to prevent the ARP packets from being sent.

Does anyone know of a way to dymanically change my IP address without sending the ARP packets that does not break other network features?

Help is very much appreciated.

A pod-cast or two ago I could swear someone called and offered a tip regarding auto mounting drives. I have my drives auto mounting but finding the opening of the windows annoying. I have re-listened to the past couple of pod-casts but I’m missing the tip. Did anyone catch that or did I just have a bad trip?

Thanks!

System freeze with iTunes

Got a strange problem with Snow Leopard that I was wondering if anyone had a solution for.

If I run iTunes, and it has a lot to do (e.g. downloading podcasts, plus maybe a TV show, etc.), about half the time the entire system will freeze up. First iTunes becomes unresponsive, then things like the dock become unresponsive, and eventually (within about a minute), the mouse becomes unresponsive, and the system turns into a big brick, requiring a hard reboot.

Any thoughts?

Thanks…

Old MacBook Pro Airport problems

Hi. I have an original 15” MacBook Pro, 2.16 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, no longer under AppleCare. I’m running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and have a problem with the AirPort failing after being used for some time.

I don’t know if it’s heat-related or time-related, but whether I’m connected to my AirPort Extreme at home or the Linksys access points at work, it works just fine for 20-30 minutes, then loses the connection. The AirPort indicator in the menu bar cycles as if it is searching for a network but is unable to connect to anything.

I’ve seen some posts on the Apple support forums suggesting that others are experiencing similar problems but getting no info from Apple.

So, any suggestions? Is there somewhere I can look for error messages to see what’s actually going on?

Thanks—

For the past two days I have not been able to get at one website. It is “http://www.adorama.com/”.

It worked fine until about two days ago. I posted a question on one of the photography forums I use to ask if others can load the site. They didn’t have any problems.

All Safari says is…

Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.adorama.com/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.

I tried changing my DNS server to the OPEN DNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) servers with no luck.

In a terminal window I did a traceroute and got this…
My Ethernet port is toast, what do I do?

First of all, my computer - a MacBook Rev. B, 1.83GHz intel core duo with an incredible 512MB of RAM (yeah, I’m lazy), running 10.5.8, chronically kernel panics. Sometimes they’re worse - once every 15 minutes - other times I’m lucky enough to only have to see that irritating black box once every 4-6 hours. Either way, there hasn’t been a single day gone by in the past six months where this computer hasn’t kernel panicked.

The initial problem with this computer was that the AirPort card started to get iffy. The hard drive suffered a pretty nasty head crash, and when I got a new HD (thank you AppleCare, that’s the one good thing you’ve done for me) and reinstalled OS X the computer showed the AirPort card as “not configured,” and all that showed up in Network prefs as viable options were Bluetooth and FireWire. It took an archive and install for the AirPort card to show up again, though now I’m not so sure that the reinstall really did anything to make the AirPort card work again. It still occasionally won’t show up or flakes out.

Anyways, after that incident was worked out, the kernel panics set in. Usually after one kernel panic, the computer kernel panics again on startup, and then 75% of the time after that, the computer will start up normally. Here are the culprit kexts:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
         com.apple.iokit.AppleYukon2(3.1.13b2)@0x5f5000->0x61ffff
            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)@0x5ce000
            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.6.1)@0x5df000

Also I will sometimes get this:
unloaded kexts:
com.apple.driver.InternalModemSupport 2.4.0 - last unloaded 93994632085
loaded kexts:
com.apple.driver.InternalModemSupport 2.4.0 - last loaded 15026348078

I can post the full logs if need be. I’m trying to conserve space here.

I tried deleting InternalModemSupport (hidden inside AppleIOSerialFamily, THAT was annoying), my logic being that since there is no internal modem in this computer, it must be confusing itself loading and unloading a useless kext, especially one compatible only with Tiger. Nope, didn’t fix it. Also considering that this issue continues no matter what system I’m running, it’s pretty safe to say that it’s hardware-related.

After trying all this stuff, reinstalling, reformatting, trying different configurations, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, running AHT overnight, testing the RAM on memtest until i was sick of looking at black and white, checking out the firmware etc. etc…I finally noticed that there’s a freakin’ pin missing on the Ethernet port. A PIN! and I didn’t notice! And the port looks to be damaged in other ways, too… So what do I do? New computer is not an option right now, I’m not that great with a soldering iron and I’m sure a new logic board would be just as expensive as a new computer. Sigh…

Oh, and a final sidenote: Whenever I open the Network pane of system prefs, it tells me “New Interface Detected”—ethernet, of course. I hate life. Oh wait, one more: When I start the computer in verbose mode, I get “AppleYukon2 - RomlessInit - getProperty failed”.

i have recently had a problem with the internal camera on my 2006(late) core2duo iMac
the camera does not show up in system profiler and no programs find it.
i have:
1 reset the pram
2 reset the smu (i think) according to the directions on the apple site
3 never cracked the case so i dont think a cable came loose
this happened about when i udated to 10.5.7
i am now in 10.6

any ideas? or do i just have a camera the went bad?

online provider and email

I have Verizon as my online provider. I’m having a lot of problems with them right now after moving. I may need to get another email address. I’ve used Seascape for email. I like the fact that I can go from email to online without closing out from one to the other. With Apple they are separate functions—Safari and Mail. In checking Apple’s “Mail” it seems you have to get “.Mac”—for a fee—to get a email address. Right? Worth the money? Are Yahoo and Google online providers that offer email? One better than the other? All suggestions/comments appreciated.

Stealth Mode Connection Attempt to UDP. I also sent this to Dave and John.

I thought I would post here also.

My Console Log is getting MAJOR cluttered up with “Stealth Mode Connection Attempt to UDP 192.168.1.101:xxxxx from 192.168.254.254:53” which the PID Sender is Firewall[57].

I did some searching and 192.168.254.254:53 is coming from my Windstream DSL modem.

I am using a Linksys WRT54G router also.

I have gone into my router setup and under the Security tab-Firewall tab- have all boxes checked: Block Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter Internet NAT REdirection, and Filter IDENT(Port 113).

On my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.1, I have firewall on. I have Block all incoming connections unchecked, I have Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections unchecked, and I have Enable stealth mode checked.

I found this clip on the web: “If you want true peace of mind and a clean firewall log, go buy a router and install it between your cable modem and mac. The router’s NAT will block anything that’s not invited.” I already had the router in line. Is my current router a NAT router? Or, is it time to get a newer router?

I also get a big string of the same stealth mode connection attempts anytime i access a website on the internet.

This all may be something that does not hurt a thing, but is sure bugging the heck out of me.

Thanks for the help, and Don’t get caught.

George.

EDIT: Ok, I think after doing some more reading, this router is NAT configurable, if that is correct terminology.

With having the router in line, does stealth mode even need to be turned on?

Again, I may be worrying about nothing here. Don’t you just love it when a newbie is trying to figure stuff out? LOL
