Looking for messaging software

I’m looking for a Yahoo style messaging app, but one that doesn’t require Internet connectivity, or a centralized server. I am installing a bunch of iMacs in a doctors office, and they would like a “pager like” system on the computers, to send quick messages back and forth.
Preferably something that is free, or inexpensive.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello! icon_biggrin.gif

Have you considered running a Hotline server on your intranet? The Hotline client can support chat and a whole host of other interesting goodies (file sharing etc.).  Both it and the ‘popular’ (?) alternative, Carracho, have been carbonised for your OS X pleasure.

I have no experience with Carracho, but Hotline makes me happy. icon_biggrin.gif

Hotline is probably overkill for this set-up, but thats a good idea for larger install, thanks for the info.

Oh darn, you came back before I finished hunting.

The additions were:

MacPopUp : they say MacPopUp is a program that allows Mac users to exchange instant messages with other users on any local area network (LAN). (snip stuff about Windows compatibility) MacPopUp lets you exchange instant messages on all major computer platforms: Windows and Mac OS. It’s just an ideal solution for workgroups and departments no matter what computers are used on a local network.

SnapTalk says:   SnapTalk is our shareware chat program for Macintosh networks. Instantly talk with anyone in your office—particularly useful if they are on the phone. You can even chat with many people at the same time. A SnapTalk pop-up window notifies you of incoming talk requests and if you are busy you can snap them off an auto-reply with a single button-click and get right back to work!

There you have it.  Hopefully this is more helpful than the first; they seem to be for small setups. icon_smile.gif
