Ok, CompUSA will get 100 copies each of OS X Upgrade. There’s 2 CompUSA’s in Orlando, so that’s 200 upgrades in the area. Now, if the sun rises in the east, but it’s cloudy, and I’m wearing a fedora backwards while I run naked in the CompUSA parking lot, do you think I’ll get a copy?
Maybe I don’t know how many OS X users there are out there already, but I kinda think there’s more than 200 in the Orlando area. Why skimp, Apple? Why not give each store 200? Cuz you know people are gonna come looking for it.
Well, I’ll let you know if I get a copy (without the naked running part).
The store I went to says that FedEx lost their shipment and they expect a second “emergency” shipment from Apple at noon today. I got my name on a reservation list for when they arrive.
One good thing came out of it… they had 10.1 installed on all their display computers for myself and the other OS X fans to try out while we waited. It was nice and fast, even on the iMacs and iBook.
MacDeb: You are a lucky duck. Here’s my sad story with a happy ending.
Got up bright and early to make my way to the Altamonte Springs store in the Orlando area, but when we got to I-4 (major throughway) it was backed up for miles. I decided to make my way to the other store in south Orlando. Got there and was greeted by a nice Mac rep (Yep, a real Apple rep. More on that later.) who told me that the shipment did not arrive and that it should show up soon. I was to put my name on the list and he would call. I did this, grumbling while I did, then went over to play on the dual 800mhz G4 with 21” display running OS X.I. SWEET!
Now, about this Apple rep. It seems that Apple pulled a fast one on us (us being anyone who have not gone to a CompUSA in the last month.) Apple has hired full time in-store reps, just like the ones in the Apple Stores, to man the outposts. These guys (and girls I assume) are bonafided Apple employees who do nothing all day but mind the Apple store within a store. Very cool indeed. I’m going to go down and interview the guy in South Orlando. (Bryan, you interested?)
Anyways, 10 AM rolls around, there’s at least 30 OS X.I upgrade-wanting folks hanging around, and still no Fed-Ex. I had to leave, but the rep said he’d give me a call when he got the goods in. My travels took me near the Altamonte Springs store so I stopped in there. The Apple rep there also had a waiting list, but he actually had copies. He was nice enough to give me one and I left the store happy as a clam.
Both reps said that they were only getting 60 upgrade copies. The South Orlando store STILL have not gotten their shipment. (Not good Federal Express, not good at all.)
So, I get home, do the upgrade (took maybe 15 minutes on my 450mhz Cube), and fired it up. Pretty sweet, I must say.
I’m upgraded and playing. So far I’ve had one total system freeze. I mean this little boy was frozen solid. Had to hard boot it. Not a good sign. Yeah, I was stressing the system, had maybe 10 apps running, then the screen saver kicked in and killed everything. But it was a third party screen saver plug-in so I’m not too worried. All in all I’m happy.
Hey Rodney, do you notice any difference between the upgrade everyone is getting versus that last build? (V asks, while running 5 apps and listening to ‘Les Nubians’ with the iTunes visualizer running.)
I had the same issue as VSeward…CompUSA didn’t have ‘em at 9:00, but the FedEx shipment came in at 10-ish so now I am running 10.1.
Some random items:
- MUCH faster!
- love the dock on the left (keeps mouse closer to toolbar too)
- crashed once with screen saver also (Apple’s, not third party)
- quick links to preferences don’t work (like when clicking the clock and choosing ‘open date & time’ or when clicking the dock and choosing ‘dock preferences - anyone else on this?)
That’s all for now. I didn’t do a clean install, just installed over 10.0.4. I may try a clean one tonight if I’m bored.

I am. Two weeks ago, I intereviewed the guy at the Birmingham CompUSA. I’d love to lend you my piece and turn it into a collaborative piece—if you want.

What exactly is a clean install? Is that a format of the hard drive or what?
Yes, essentially. I did a clean install. Here’s my version.
I have three partitions. I erased the OS X partition (single-click on icon for X; go to the main menu and select Special—> Erase Disk). I then installed 10.9 onto the partition. Restarted and did the registration thing on X. I then went and installed 10.1 over that. I forgot to mention that backed up my documents and my favorite shareware (Drop Drawers, MacReporter, Snard, Prefling, etc.). and reinstalled that onto 10.1
