Hi,

I have just sold my iMac SE to my dad Ò‘cause I am moving from Brazil to Canada. I am planning to buy a new one as soon as I get there. The problem is: should I wait for the MacWord in a hope of a new iMac (hopefully with a flat screen) or should I buy one immediately?

Although I really need a computer to work there, I would hate myself to buy a brand new “old model”.

Thank you for help and oppinions.

Rafel

I would suggest that you wait until after Macworld if possible.  As you said, it would be a shame to get a current model when newer ones could easily be under three weeks away.  Regardless of whether it’s an LCD model or not, I think an udated iMac of some sort may be in store.  Also in the event that no new iMac comes out, you will at least have the sastisfaction of knowing you didn’t miss out on anything. icon_smile.gif

David,

This is what I need to hear, thanks. I have one more question, since I am kind of new in Mac bussiness… If a new mac is lounched in the MWNY, how long does it actually takes to get one? Just the delivery time. or its takes months and months? Do you have any idea? Thanks again!

With some products it has taken a month or two to get to stores.  On the other hand, others arrive much sooner.  I wouldn’t count on it being available in under two or three weeks, though it could be longer or shorter.  “Months and months” shouldn’t be the expected wait, however.

Just hope that this wait is worth it. Hopefully the new iMac wont be too much expensive…

by the way, why the hell they have discontinued the cube? Cause its expensive and nobody bought it?

In a word, yes.  The cube was overpriced.  The engineering Apple underwent to create the cube was too expensive, there was no room for the cube at the price point.  Most people buying G4s want a tower for a certain purpose, which usually involves upgrades.  The Cube was not very upgradable and required such special parts that it made it too expensive.  It was basically an iMac with a G4 processor with the price hiked up and the monitor removed.  The cheapest tower was almost as fast, but offered expandibility.  It was a bad situation.  The cube was cool, but unlike popular conception, the Mac community is not all about style over substance.

icon_frown.gif $#!%! No really new iMacs…. anyway… now at least I don’t have to chose the drive (all of them come with CDRW). The question is does it make much difference from 500 to 600 MHZ???? What about from 600 to 700???

Thanks

The only real difference I can see besides processor speed is Hard disk size.  One thing to note though:  ALthough I searched the Apple site for the speed of these hard drives, I cam up dry.  But in the G4 tower, going from a 40 GB to a 60 GB drive also gets you an upgrade in hard drive speed, from 5400 to 7200 RPM.  They most likely use the same hard drives in their iMacs.  This speed can help digital video editing.

Oh yes, and if you want the graphite color you need to buy at least a 600 MHz machine. icon_biggrin.gif

If it were up to me, I would just go with the low end G4 tower, especially if you have a monitor sitting around.  Monitors are relatively cheap, if you don’t.  If I had to pick an iMac, I would go 700 MHz.  You want a computer that will last you a longer time.  I think the extra money is worth it, to get a faster machine.  Theoretically a 700 MHz iMac should be 16% faster than a 600 MHz iMac.

Now new rumors about flat screen iMacs for the Paris Expo!!!!!

What the hell !!! Does anyone here believe that? I have just ordered an 600Mhz (I didn’t have any monitor around…). I know that I will regret if this new iMac come on september… however, I cannot wait until september to get a computer… anyway, if this new iMac comes, wouldn’t be wiser to wait for the second revision (or at least wait for the real consumet test?). For example: I wouldn’t be happy if I had bought the Cube ... anyway, who knows…

Let see what happen in September.

Rafael

ps. Sorry folks, I really want NO NEW imacs for that expo!!

You’d want to rob us of our Mac goodness?  That’s like telling someone your going to take their computer away.  It makes me very very unhappy…

(I know, I’m scaring myself)

Hey, look at it this way. If you wait for that improvement that’s just around the corner, you’ll never buy a computer.

I will have to bite the bullet soon and get a new Mac. My poor ol’ beige G3 just ain’t cuttin’ it, though she was one heck of a machine in her day. And yes, I can justify this beyond sheer lust, since I’m a professional Unix geek and I need an OS X machine. Well, okay, I could justify it with sheer lust as well, but I’m saving that justification for the LCD monitor.

I agree with tbone1 on this concept.  You can wait forever for the next computer, but you will forever be waiting if you do.

Since the return of Jobs, even a “bad” Mac is still a really good computer.  HArd to go wrong.
