Hello Everyone,

This is just a brief posting re something that I think is quite amazing, and certainly a challenge that is IMHO almost unprecedented and may appeal to those of us with an adventurous streak.  Or two.

Two years ago, a young Australian sailed into his home port of Sandringham, in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, Victoria Australia, and into the history books as the youngest person ever to circumnavigate the globe solo, and without fossil fuels.  His epoch making voyage, sailing single handed around the globe raised international attention and praise.  His name was Jesse Martin.

Two years later, at age only 20, he and a crew of four others are heading off on a voyage of discovery anticipated to last two years as they re-circumnavigate the globe, but this time stopping off and journeying through many countries that the young man was unable to visit in the original voyage.

A book, ‘Lionheart’ has been written, and also a film documentary; the book I believe will be released in the US in May.  Apart from the sheer youth of the crew, and their incredible courage and daring, what sets this journey apart for those of us with an interest in the Mac, and computing, and the reason why I’m mentioning it here, is that they have been successful in gaining the sponsorship of a number of partners, including Apple MacIntosh Australia and a local Melbourne Reseller of Apple Products.

The intention, as I understand it, is that they will be using G4 Titanium Notebooks, Digital Video Cameras, and using them with Final Cut Pro, Photoshop etc to produce a filmed documentary of the voyage.  Additionally, as I understand it,there will be uplinks via sattellite on an ongoing basis, utilising Quicktime Video Clips, so the world can share in the adventure.  Or at leat some of it!

Now I’m not sure if I’ve posted in the ‘right’ (if there is one!) section of the overall forum with this, and I guess the Mac (aha, I mentioned the word at last!) connection is a small one, but a very important and vital one in my view.  And my congratulations to Apple and Designwyse for supporting this incredible adventure, and mostly for having the technology to make it EASY and to make it WORK.

As a last note, I’ve not had the priviledge of meeting the crew members, or even corresponded with them, in fact there’s no association at all, but man, do they inspire your dreams, or what!  And isn’t this in some way what the Mac is about?  To allow us to express our dreams, and create things we never thought possible?  To free us from the tyranny of technology and enable us to develop in creative ways unfettered by the burden of recalcitrant tools?

I hope that these young people will have a fabulous time, and that with the help of Apple Technology, we will all be able to share in their dreams in some small way or other.

For those that are interested, I’ve attempted (only a newbie here) to include the URL to the Web site, where you can peruse more information, and some interesting Pictures.

Thanks for reading this, hope it means something to some of you dreamers, and philosophers out there,, and daresay I suggest that if you own a Mac, then you’re one of those sort of individuals, in the nicest possible way.

Cheers,

John. icon_smile.gif

You Get It.

You realize what the Mac does best.

Thanks for the info.  Inspirational.
