ITunes shows artist, but not iPod

Hello,
My son has a new 30g iPod. Here’s the question:
All the artists show up on iTunes when he is plugged in on my Mac, but when he unplugs the iPod, some of the artist’s names don’t show up in the artist section; although the album name does. If he makes a playlist with that artist, that shows up OK. There are more than one artists that this happens to. We tried deleting them from the iPod and then bringing them over from the library, but the names still don’t show up.
Any ideas???????
