iMovie to QuickTime Conversion Questions

Hi!

I have a student’s iMove roughly about 30 minutes in length. I’d like to convert it to QuickTime 5, three different ways: A short, one-minute preview for a Web site, a version to be burned to CD and a version to remain on a hard drive as an example of work.

I’m looking through my iMovie and QuickTime Pro books looking for the best match between file size and quality. The CD version will need to be compressed from about 10 Gigs of data to no more than 700 MBs. The version to remain on the hard drive I’d like to compress to no more than 3 Gigabytes for storage and playback purposes.

Does anyone have tips or recommendations on the best way to preserve quality while reducing file size in the three different conversions of the data from iMovie to QuickTime?

Yes. I am willing to do further edits if need be to reduce the data size of the iMovie before conversion to QT 5. But I’d prefer to keep as much of the movie as possible icon_lol.gif

Thanks!

Robert

My favorite topics. iMovie and compression. icon_biggrin.gif

A short, one-minute preview for a Web site

This is easier than you might think. From Export… choose the Web Small selection. Export the movie. Then in Quicktime Pro, cut the part of the movie you do not want shown. Save the movie as slef-contained, and post it. This will give you the one minute preview on the web that is already encoded for web use in the best way.

a version to be burned to CD

First try the CD selection from the Export menu. It should make it fit. If it does not, then go to Expert and try the following:

Size: Since the movie starts out at about 640x480, you must divide and conquer by even numbers. Change the res of the movie to 320x240. This will keep file size down and also make it so there will be no cropping if you make the CD-ROM a VCD..

Always do best depth, millions of colors. Just looks better.

For the sound, compress it using IMA 4:1. This is a good compressor that will result in little-to-none loss of quality.

Make sure the fps is 29.97.

If this does not work, let me know and I will try a little tweaking.

and a version to remain on a hard drive as an example of work.

Just export at Full Size. The movie should come out to exactly 3GBs, maybe a tiny bit over.

Try these. If they do not work, let me know. I will look into it a little bit more. Will create a 30 minute movie of my own and test out my calculations. icon_smile.gif

Thanks, Spider!

A few days ago I posted a thread thanking the staff, specialists, moderators and members for their contributions to what I consider to be the best online Mac community on the Internet. After reading your advice I think I should have said more icon_smile.gif

By the way, I was up in your neck of the woods awhile back. My kids have an aunt who lives in Weaverville. If I recall that’s a quick left after hitting Redding and then a harrowing jaunt up the mountainside on a very scenic but relatively narrow road icon_eek.gif

Beautiful country!

Robert,

I am always glad to help. icon_smile.gif Especially Mac users, they are the most friendly and easy to talk to.

Weaverville. How many times I have driven there, and wished I hadn’t. icon_lol.gif The drive is horrible, but the place is great. Definitely a place to visit when you are up here. Redding is becoming a small Sacramento.

Did any of my suggestions work? I usually peg iMovie questions first time, but I do slip. icon_lol.gif

Gosh, waking up and looking at a picture postcard view of the mountains is awesome! But that drive. Yikes! icon_lol.gif

I haven’t attempted your recommendations yet. The school is out of session for two weeks and ideally I’d like the student to do the work with me. I may pop in later this week. I have a few things to do on the PowerSchool server and I may at least try a “dry run”.

I’m moving this year’s yearbook to a digital process and may have a few InDesign/Photoshop questions in terms of the best way to bring the images in and do the RGB to CMYK conversion. I figure you’re a natural for advice icon_smile.gif

Thanks again!

Robert

Thanks for the vote of confidence. icon_smile.gif

Photshop I will be able to help with.  I love that program. InDesign…well, I screwed with it, but I like PageMaker too much to use InDesign. I have not tried the new version yet, so it might be better.

I have used PageMaker since Aldus made it, and I stand by the tride and true methods. icon_smile.gif

I actually made my 8th grade yearbook, by myself, in PageMaker. Scary…icon_lol.gif

It is a bad thing that is becoming good….if that makes any sense.

I just love it when someone else has asked my question!!!  big grin

Dear hubby has me doing about a dozen tapes to CD, anywhere from 10 minutes to a hour each.

A rookie could end up pulling out their hair, doing trial and error.

As to PageMaker… I still have my vs. 3 disks!  Anyone else remember the days before spell checkers.

I do! In fact, that’s what started my illustrious writing/editing/publishing career. I marched in to the local underground rock & roll paper and told the publisher, “You need me. I can spell.”

We used Pagemaker v.1 on a Mac Plus. Once you’ve laid out a tabloid-size paper on a 9-inch screen, anything is possible!

Going to show my true age here….eek!  lol

When I was in high school, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper. AS that, I got access to the nice powerful 9500, while the rest of the class to use Mac Pluses….and they used PageMaker 1 to design their layouts on.  This was in 1998.

This was quite sad.  razz

I remember using that program the year before when I first got on the paper…I ended up going home and using version 4 to do my layouts.

I know how you all feel. smile
