I’d like to setup wireless networking in my home, since the ethernet outlets I installed when it was being built aren’t where I want them now that it’s finished and furnished ;( doh!  Nothing like stringing 20’ cables across the living room floor with dogs running around.

I want to do this with both my iBook and a Thinkpad, can I use an Airport card in my iBook with a wireless access point device like the D-Link or Linksys, etc?  I’ve noticed that most of the PC devices say they’re 802.11b whereas the Airport indicates 802.11.

Anyone have experiences they’d care to share?

Thanks!

yes, this can work. At Micro Center, where I work on weekends, they have a Linksys wireless hub connected to their PC network. In the PC section, we have a laptop connected to the wireless connection via a PCMCIA card. In the Mac section, we have a 533 MHz G4 connected to the same hub via the internal AirPort card—in OS X, no less.

The AirPort card is 802.11b and is Wi-Fi certified.  Therefore it should work with all other Wi-Fi certified devices.
Devices at http://www.wi-fi.net/certified_products.asp
WECA (wireless ethernet compatibility alliance) tests all products submitted for Wi-Fi certification against all other certified products. Even though a product may be 802.11b, the software and firmware may not work with other 802.11b products.  The Wi-Fi testing promotes interoperability of products.

On a related front, is there a way to get a mac and pc talking in ad-hoc mode? I installed airport version 1.3 which has a ‘computer-to-computer’ option and now my pc can see the mac adapter, but I cannot get it to ping back. I tried putting them on the same subnet - didnt work. The mac (titanium g4) shows no sign of seeing anyone else out there. I would be extremely grateful for some answers.
