Funnily enough I posted something similar on the IV board earlier today:

Agreed - its pretty amazing stuff, and just shows how much Bill Shope @ JPM NYC feels he has to lose. I’d bet money he’s recommended his clients go short AAPL and was furious at this call from JPM’s Taiwanese office. Its unprecedented for there to be such a public bitch slapping, which does nothing except make them look like a Mickey Mouse outfit that doesn’t have a clue what’s going on.

Oh wait, they are a Mickey Mouse outfit that haven’t got a clue…

I actually support the conclusion of JPM in NY. A nanoPhone will be coming out, but not by Christmas. As I have written in a previous post, Apple will first cater to the top tier of consumers and then slowly ratchet down the price for a wider set of consumers. Just like it did with the iPod, which spawned the iPod mini, nano and shuffle, or just like how the PowerMac spawned the iMac and Mac mini.

I suppose the Taiwanese analyst had gotten a bit to arrogant or had had enough of the american office intransigence that in an outburst thought “I have had enough of you clowns! I will show you now!”. And in his youthful exhuberance, came to the right conclusion, but with the wrong time.

But in this game timing is everything.

Well, now Appleinsider.com is resurrecting the iPhone nano September release rumor.  roll eyes

Maybe Apple just sees easy money in the $300 iPod + phone market, and they’ve been counting on the competition being distracted by the iPhone.

I haven’t read the thread, but is the iPhone nano a bigger deal financially than the iPhone? The numbers are so much bigger, and the margins will be about the same, don’t you think?

Like I said, the sooner the better. The more people who buy into the iPhone - full size or nano - the better. The bigger the family gets, the bigger the family gets,if you understand me.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that an iPhone nano would be based on that patent. Principally, Apple doesn’t want to let a Chinese manufacturer make a clickwheel phone that doesn’t use the clickwheel for music (except with a software hack that anyone can get off the internet, of course). The patent is just widening the moat protecting Apple’s assets, because there’s an obvious opportunity for a new application of the wheel idea. And Apple certainly can’t claim to have invented either the wheel, or the rotary dial phone. OTOH, music phones are a big market.
