[quote author=“DawnTreader”]I’m not suggesting the iPhone relace someone’s primary Mac or PC. I am suggesting it’s a replacement for a 2nd PC or even a laptop for more passive computer users.

I found my iPhone to be a great compliment to my Macbook for work on the go.  The day after purchase I took my iPhone and Macbook to a week long family reunion.  I had to edit a newspaper layout while there, but it could be done in one sitting.  However the WiFi access at the campsite (no cell signal) was a good 1/2 mile hike over a hill from my cabin.  As other family members carried their laptops with them or at least kept them in the public areas of the camp, I was able to use my iPhone to keep up with messages and files keeping me updated on my work, and didn’t have to lug out the heavy gear until I was ready to sit down and do the job.  As an added bonus we were able to use the maps function to find places to eat as we traveled.  It won’t replace a laptop, but it sure fills the gaps when a laptop is overkill for your needs at the moment.

P.S. First post as a registered user.  Thanks! lol

[quote author=“Tommo_UK”][quote author=“DawnTreader”]How many people lug laptops around to do nothing more than surf the Web, check e-mails and watch movies while on the road?

I can seriously say that when I travel, unless its on business and for some reason I need more power than web browisng and email, I will not bother taking my laptop with me any more now that I’ve got an iPhone. What’s the point? Now that I can access my home Mac via the internet from my iPhone thanks to the telekinesis project I’ve no need to carry a laptop with me at all, because I can access any documents I need from the iPhone.
The iPhone skates ahead of the puck. The laptop is rapidly going to be relegated to use only by those who need to open, negotiate, and use complex documents, spreadsheets, presentations or run bespoke enterprise software. For 90% of “the rest of us,” the laptop just got made redundant.

And thus Apple now competes with the other PC makers not with a cheap laptop, but with an elegant $600 phone. Along the way Apple pumps access to the Web and thus commerce through its own delivery pipe, further establishing its own products and service avenue as a means to reach customers for eCommerce.

Eventually, developers will have to adapt products for the QT platform. This will only help the Mac as Apple further establishes its product solutions as the emerging paradigm to reach customers.

I’ve never quite understood what you mean by QT platform. It just a media playback and creation layer, it doesn’t support apps development, or am I missing something? Do envision Apple extending QT to compete with Adobe’s AIR/Flex/Apollo, MS’s .Net/WPF/Silverlight, Java 7, and the other Rich Interactive App platforms ?

Yes. I expect Apple to extend the QT architecture to include limited app development to support future playback devices.
