Let’s hope that turns into a Morning Star.

If you take out the sarcasm filler Andrew Orlowski of the Register has a very positive view of the iPod Touch and how it is set to dominate.

the article can be found Here

Some highlights:

“...And as a bonus, the importance of which few pundits or bloggers have realised yet, Apple stealthily enters a new market altogether: the connected PDA. This ‘Second Box’ business is one that almost everyone has neglected, because they’ve followed the conventional wisdom that Everything Must Be Converged. But what if that isn’t true?”

“...All along, I’ve pegged the iPhone as a defensive move disguised. as an offensive strategy. If Apple hadn’t introduced a phone, it would be marked down for imminent death at the hands of the mobile phone companies - Sony Ericsson does music very nicely indeed.

My, how that script is going to need a rewrite, after this week…”

“As we can now see, Apple has fulfilled its primary responsibility to its shareholders: to strengthen and extend the appeal of its most successful product line, the iPod.

Where does this place Apple in the great ‘convergence’ debate?

Sitting very nicely, actually. With the iPod Touch, Steve Jobs is saying: ‘Look, you can have your One-Box converged device if you really, really want it. But people won’t mind two - if the second is attractive enough.”“

“The losers in this are manufacturers of do-it-all converged devices, particularly high-end smartphones. Nokia has most to think about here because, as the champion of One Box converged products, it’s been undertaking some very ill-advised marketing recently.”

“Like the LED, the Multi-Touch was invented here in Britain, and becomes another Great British innovation got away. And the team behind the iPod Touch? British again, led by Ken McAlpine and David Tupman.”

07:37   Ratings cos’ practices get rated - WSJ

WSJ reports in the wake of mortgage-market turmoil, regulators plan to probe how the big credit-rating cos are paid and whether they are independent enough of the Wall Street firms that issue bonds. The SEC and state attorneys general in NY and OH have begun to examine how the ratings firms evaluated subprime-mortgage-backed securities that grew into a trillion-dollar mkt. The ratings firms include Standard & Poor’s (MHP); the Moody’s Investors Service (MCO), whose stock has soared in recent years; and Fitch Ratings. Critics point out that ratings firms’ financial fortunes are closely tied to the volume of securities deals—and that higher ratings often spur deals on by making securities easier to sell.

Now if only the pathetic and toothsless SEC would “rate” the analysts firms on the same basis we might get some decent due diligence. Some performance ratings would be good too (with as much weight given to those who constantly UNDERestimate a company’s future performance as those who overestimate).

An observation from TSC:

Is it me or has micro managing Apple (AAPL) and Steve Jobs’ every movement become an obsession with the media lately?

Too right- there’s too much dumb-arsed writing and no decent analysis going on. The markets, and the media are so obsessed with trying to be “right” about Apple that they’re all completely missing the real story. its really sickening me.

As usual, they totally miss the elephant in the room, Apple, and seem to forget that the iPhone is outselling every other smartphone in the market. Do they think it will be any different in Europe?

07:49   MOT Motorola: If Google’s phone runs on Linux platform, it could have negative impact for Motorola and Palm - Unstrung.com (17.42 )
Unstrung.com reports that Symbian currently dominates the smartphone market with a 67% share, thanks to its strength in Europe, and Microsoft (MSFT) commands a 14% share of the market. If GOOG can make even a small chink in MSFT’s or Symbian’s armour this could be a blow for Motorola (MOT) and Palm (PALM). MOT has just introduced a new Linux platform, and PALM is working on one. GOOG is said to be working on a Linux-based mobile operating system for phones. This would bring GOOG directly into competition with MSFT and Symbian. “I have confirmed it is a Linux mobile operating system Google will be rolling out,” a source tells Unstrung. The source says that GOOG is working on, and has been demonstrating, “powerful tools” for third-party developers that could turn the phone business into a “race between Symbian, Microsoft Mobile, and Google Linux.”

Huh? Google Linux? Microsoft Mobile?

What about OS X on the iPhone? A usual, the media have this curious “blind spot” when it comes to talking about anything Apple does as a platform in its own right.

Unstrung.com? More like “unhinged.com” roll eyes

[quote author=“rattyuk”]Unfortunately, Colin Barr’s take over at The Street is not going to help things.
Article here .
“Dumb-o-Meter score: 93. The company said Thursday it will give existing iPhone customers $100 in store credit to smooth over ruffled feathers. “We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers,” Jobs explained.”
Why is it the fact that Apple have just upgraded their entire ipod line elude him? Probably because it doesn’t serve him or his shorting bear mates.

Unfortunately the new iPods were totally - and I mean completely obliterated - by the furore over the iPhone price cut. This was the biggest PR/Launch screw-up since the Special Event on Feb 28 2006 when Jobs proudly introduced $100 leather iPod cases and the iPod Hi-Fi. Its such a shame.

On the other hand, the entire world now knows that iPhones can be bought for $399 now, so this pigs ear definitely has a silver (or rather a silk) lining roll eyes

People seem to like the new iPod ‘fatty’ Nano.
See the comments on the un-boxing pictures on AppleInsider here

Seems they look better in real live than on the ads/presentation of wednesday, which is good for AAPL.

The Dutch (and hopefully eventually the EU) have dropped their antitrust charges against iTunes and the iPod.

That needs to be sent to all the news sites that cover Apple. It’s about time we had some good news.

It was something that was waiting in the wings for the bears to use. It’s removal has to be a net positive.

EDIT: And it gives the talking heads on the tabloid financial shows something else to talk about other than completely fabricated iPhone stories.

EDIT2: Heck! They might even start talking about the fact Apple has a killer line of iPods for the holiday season that will clean up.

A method has surfaced for creating your own ringtones using iTunes 7.4. You can use any song, and its free. Until Apple plugs the hole.
