[quote author=“sleepygeek”]The original iMac was a desperate but effective smoke and mirrors stopgap product by SJ to bluff Apple’s way out of a hole. It didn’t offer anything new, just discarded the old (floppy, ADB, RS232, separate screen) and wrapped it in a novel enclosure, but that was enough.

I have to disagree with this to the extent that what the iMac did was re-establish stye at Apple.

After years of Gil Amelio tying to peddle Performas this revolutionary product set the style in design that we all marvel at today.

It may look dated now, but you saw them everywhere, and everyone new it was an Apple computer.  This is the item that saved Apple from bankruptcy.

You’re right there was some smoke and mirrors involved, but let’s not forget its importance in the big scheme of things.  In addition to that its successor line is simply amazing in style, value, and performance.

I guess i’m not really disagreeing, but just adding some perspective to your comment.

I wouldn’t blame Dr. Amelio for the Performa fiasco. The mess was pretty much made by Michael Spindler. It was Dr. Amelio who ordered the $700 million write-down when the parts were dumped into a landfill.
