Shockingly, research says that when you take a wildly popular product and cut its price by 1/3, demand takes off.
Well I never… call me shocked and spank me now:oh:

I think sales will treble following the price cut and Apple will take more than 5% of the handset market in the US in October, November and December.

IMO, this is a very valid piece of research. I believe sales will indeed go up 2-2.5 times. The question now is how much did AAPL do before the price drop.

If it is about 850-900K through Sep 5th (2 months), then I would add at least another 600-800K to this (for the 25 days of Sep) and come up with 1.5M-1.7M for all of the Sep Qtr. Will that be enough to get people to think that iPhone sales are a big success? I don’t know know the answer to that question. From my own POV, after this price drop, I want to see a MIN of 2.0M iPhone sales through Sep 30th. Else, with the price drop, I would be less than fully impressed.

As for Monday, I think it all depends on indices, and that in turn may depend on how the futures behave before the open.

As of right now SPX/NDX/DJX futures and USD/JPY have gapped down and are bouncing - but just a bit.  frown

Re: Another one…

[quote author=“information”] Another study saying that there will be a dramatic increase in iPhone sales.

from the study

8% of consumers said they would be willing to pay for the iPhone at its original price point of $599.

At $399, interest increased almost 2.5X to 18%.

The “sweet spot” of consumer interest appears to be $100-$299.

Might Apple drop the current 8G phone to $299 once a 16G model with 3G is available. I tend to think the “European version” will be released in the States as of MacWorld, otherwise there would be more upset “late” adopters. But if in January the 3G version could be $399-499, then the 8G version could drop into the sweet spot a lot of potential buyers are hoping for.

I think Apple would be more apt to discontinue the current model than discount it again. The reason being is Apple hardly ever cuts prices. The market accepts Apple’s reasons for the one-time cut in the current iPhone’s price.

Another price cut IMHO would send the wrong signal to the market that Apple will continue to cut prices on the iPhone as a means to move more product. I think $399 is fine with the iPod Touch at $299.

Apple iTunes glitch reveals movie rental preparations

Apple iTunes glitch reveals movie rental preparations

By AppleInsider Staff

Published: 03:00 PM EST
While attempting to notify Apple of a problem with its iTunes Store, one user stumbled upon evidence that suggests the company may be gearing up to offer movie rentals through the digital download service.

“I was trying to report a problem via iTunes, and this pop-up for selecting a reason contains some interesting/revealing strings,” David Watanabe wrote in a posting the popular Flickr image sharing website. “[It] looks like ‘RentalMovies’ will be coming to the iTunes store.”

Among the reasons for reporting a problem listed in the Apple-created menus were “DidNotReceiveMovie-RentalMovie,” “AccidentalPurchase-RentalMovie,” “ContentQuality-RentalMovie,” “DuplicatePurchase-RentalMovie,” “WrongVErsion-RentalMovie,” “BadMetadata-RentalMovie” and “Other-RentalMovie.”

Rumors that Apple would eventually be compelled to supplement its a la carte movie download service with a rental option have been making the rounds ever since the company first began offering downloadable flicks nearly two years ago.

The most recent report on the matter came courtesy of the Financial Times, which reported in June that Apple was in advanced talks with Hollywood’s largest movie studios about launching an online film rental service to challenge cable and satellite TV operators.

According to the report, individual films on the iTunes service would fetch $2.99 for a 30-day rental and would be governed by digital rights-management software that would allow users to transfer the movie “from a computer to at least one other device such as the video iPod or iPhone.”

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, everything that Apple has done since the return of SJ involves maintaining price points. Apple prices for the consumer laptop has been the same for years (about $1000). When new features are announced, old product is discontinued rather than discounted. I think the fact that Apple discounted the iPhone price rather than offer a new product is what made the early adapters upset.
Now taking a look at the iPod/iPhone price points, it appears to me that the iPhone is priced correctly compared to the iPod Touch.  BTW, it was too high at $599.

The fact that the iTunes store is at least partly set up for movie rentals doesn’t prove they are imminent (although of course it shows intention).

With component video out, iPod nano, touch and iPhone become the perfect complement to a rental service; dock them at a booth in the mall or gas station and pick up movie rentals, even if you have no PC or internet service at home.

That, or Apple seriously needs to get industrial-strength bandwidth for its already Wi-Fi-overtaxed Apple Stores.
