[quote author=“sleepygeek”][quote author=“willrob”]3G can’t be software enabled. It requires a chip, which the FCC application showed the iPhone lacks. You’re probably right, but there could be a further FCC application for a revised iPhone, not yet published.
I remember having read in some geek page (I can’t find it now) that the chip Apple uses for wireless communication does not feature 3G. I or my source must be wrong of course. What is sure is that without the proper hardware, no 3G is possible.
Mum; not mother but ‘mmmmm’, the humming sound made with a closed mouth. Used by Shakespeare in Henry VI, Part 2:
“Seal up your lips and give no words but mum.”
The one news item that everyone knows about but has not been “officially” commented on is iPhone in Europe.
I’d imagine this is at least the UK details if not France/Germany also.
I’m absolutely going to by iPhone UK Version 1.0 but I really, really hope that Apple releases a UMTS version for Europe because there’s a lot of 3G coverage over here and it would be a real shame to have an iPhone which doesn’t take advantage of it.
Speak up now, into the iPhone, - Mum is no longer the word

No no.. bugger the iPhone; its not important anyway. This is all about iTunes, I guarantee you (free paella if I’m wrong). This is huge.. its massive.. its.. the entire works of William Shakespeare - on your iPod!!! And you can make ringtones from them too. Can’t you hear it now - banish the cursed “Marimba” ringtone forever, to be replaced with 15-second soundbites from the Bard: “Hark! Peace! It was the owl that shriek’d, the fatal bellman”...
It’s no guarantee, of course, but the network is believed to be busily upgrading its network to support Edge, the faster-than-GPRS-but-not-3G data technology, which could point to the arrival of the current version of the iPhone and not a forecast - and much desired - UMTS version.

[quote author=“capablanca”][quote author=“quantman”]Does anyone know if AAPL has come up details on the iPhone rebate yet? It was supposed to be this week…......Thanks!
I shall work on this and try to post an answer within a few hours.
As of 7:00pm PDT, the store-credit details had not been released to the store where I checked.
Oh my god, how embarrassing… This is from a Forbes.com “The Best Of Apple” recap by Peter Hoy:
Despite the iPhone’s recent price cuts, it has spooked the industry. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has seen its stock price halve since the iPhone was released in June.
Um, hello? Petey? You ever hear of a split??? I wish AAPL would have performed as “poorly” as RIMM since the iPhone’s release!

That just about sums up these ill-informed, big-mouthed idiots. So quick to throw together some completely unresearched opinion piece that has no grounding in reality.
RIMM is actually up quite a lot since the iPhone was released.
