AAPL/O2 in 40% revenue sharing deal

The 40% revenue share and rumour of no unlimited data plan in France makes me fear Apple may not have insisted on an unlimited data plan from O2. Although not important for the first 3-6 months, I think an unlimited plan (at whatever price it has to be), is essential to change usage patterns for ordinary consumers. Once they are burned by the incredibly high charges typical for mobile data, they will simply never bring it into daily use.

O2 is understood to have agreed a margin on the retail price - to be confirmed tomorrow - but will return to Apple as much as 40% of any revenues it makes from customers’ use of the device

O2 will also have to pay Apple 600 Pound Sterling for each iPhone sold in the UK !!!  big grin
Com-on, 40% is just absurdadurd !  This simply can’t be true.

Yes, it could be true - if Apple are selling the iPhone to O2 at a deeper discount thus giving the network a fat margin on the unit sale.

You mean Apple may have concluded that the T-deal was a disaster as it provided too small a direct-incentive for T and therefore Apple will change the nature of the matter towards a real subsidisation ?

Heise-Online News a German site reports that the T deal involves 30% so not too far away from the 40% in the UK - that sounds more realistic!

I cannot believe the iPhone will launch with anything other than an unlimited data plan. It would be simply insane not to make this a basic feature of the device.

That’s probably what they had agreed in the UK too, until O2 came along and offered 40% to snatch the deal, which is why Apple switched at the last minute smile

I agree. I cannot believe Apple has not insisted on some form of unlimited data plan. Apple knows the consumer relies on Apple to give them an overall quality and fair experience regardless of other enterprises in the mix. It is an Apple deal as far as the user is concerned not O2 or any other carrier. Data is more important than voice for Apple as the spread of Safari is important for future Apple sales of the platform

I see existing unlimited data plants currently delivered through DSL being extended for use through wi-fi spots or the GSM network, by means of a flat price addition.

I see our friend Tony Sacconaghi (the cell phone market specialist) has thought some more about the iPhone.  Due to revenue sharing he figures that Apple could even sell them at a loss and still make more money than they do on the highest end iPod.

Notice he doesn’t bother to do the maths to see what they might earn on the assumption the actually -shock horror-sell them at a profit and also benefit from the subscriber revenue sharing roll eyes This is the same guy who said he “sees no upside to $78 for AAPL in 2007” back in December.
He’s a total tool.
