So, predictably, the BBC runs an assassination piece on Apple:

Bill Thompson has rewritten the piece everybody wrote at the beginning of the week about the court ruling on Microsoft. Except he is now presenting it as THIS MUST BE DONE. He works his way through all the new changes in the system saying that Apple are going out of their way to lock down the ipod and protect their monopoly.

But what would you really expect from the BBC who now have two ex Microsoft Digital Media people in place right at the top?

So let me get this straight, Bill Thompson = BBC = Former Microsoft Employees = Microsoft? Bill Thompson is Microsoft? Is that what you’re actually saying?

Nope.

If you read the BBC website they NEVER have anything positive to say about Apple. Every piece is laced with at best faint praise - usually much, much worse. BBC news staff = Bill Thompson and the ilk have nothing positive to say.

BBC / Former Microsoft staff = BBC iPlayer which is windows 2000, XP only. They only said they would look into the Mac version 6 months down the line after a huge hue and cry about what they had done.

The general spin on Microsoft being slapped by the EU is that Apple have to now look out as they will be the next to go. Well at the moment that is pure FUD reporting.

Generally the limitations put into iPods have been driven by the record companies rather than by Apple. And I think there is a “discussion” going on today about the record company restrictions of borders throughout Europe - which may be another reason why Steve Jobs is over at the moment too.

Actually, I think he does make some arguable points. Unfortunately there’s nowhere to comment on this misleading article.

BBC has a proud and honorable history.  Today it is nothing but a bunch of government looters spewing propoganda for their own nefarious purposes.

Here is Roughly Drafted take on this specific example.

“I want to admire Apple. I want to like them. In the last year I’ve bought - with my own money - three of its computers and two iPods, and enjoy them greatly…”

This doesn’t sound like a person who wishes Apple any harm IMO. Could the piece, by any stretch of the imagination, be interpreted as constructive criticism?  Or, is he just plain misinformed?  I’m long on Apple and am concerned by some of these very issues.  Thanks for the article by the way, we need to discuss these things here.

Fact of the matter is he is a freelance journalist, who is paid by old media (including the BBC), and old media is set on locking down the citizen into a pay per play walled garden. Good journalists instinctively know their market and write appropriate pieces. Hopefully he will get the message that at least some people see through this. . .

I haven’t read the piece yet (on purpose) and I used to have big respect for Bill Thompson and his more-often-than-not insightful commentary. I’m regular listener of BBC World service’ Digital Planet (former Go Digital, where BT is “regular studio expert”) but I started to dislike the programme a bit after their iPhone coverage (Apple coverage in general iPhone coverage in particular). You know it’s one of those things that make you wonder - if they use such stupid and misinformed arguments about topic you know very well what about those topics you don’t know at all? I was really angry when they downplayed iPhone as nothing really new and month later praised Microsoft’s research center and their conference about next ten years of computing where they apparently presented visual voice mail (!) that should be part of our futuristic homes around 2017. They also talked about some stuff that sounded like Newton’s handwriting recognition. Yep, iPhone is like any other two years old smartphone (doesn’t do anything more and according to Bill does even less) but this stuff rocks. That was so f*cking crazy.

(Outside of that I love BBC’ podcasts especially current extended selection so thank you British tax payers for funding BBC! big grin )

Great post - I’ve copied it to the IV board as well.
