AAPL: Time to Split?

Any thoughts on when (if) AAPL will split? I’m hoping their newfound friendship with GOOG hasn’t steered Apple’s sight to the $500 per share club.

JT, welcome to AFB!

Ahh the AAPL stock split, a love/hate topic if ever there was one. Personally I’ve been dead against a split because I just don’t see the need for one: the company’s results speak for themselves, and it shouldn’t have to resort to . Conversely, I do understand how out of reach many individual investors find any stock over $100.

I’d like to see them resist calls for a split for now, and perhaps revisit the idea once the stock looks like hitting $200.

OT: I see you’re in the army. Do iPhones work in Iraq, and does anyone have an unlocked one out there? big grin

The policy that provided the last 3 splits to keep the share price roughly below $100, is no longer in force, so there may not be another split.

JToddH, welcome aboard and an appreciative thanks & Hooah! to all y’all downrange! Stay safe!

Opinion on a split seems to be divided here. I’m sure I’ll get argument on this, but for several reasons I personally would like to see a 3 or 4 (or even 5) for one - something in the 35-50 range. APPL had a previous history of splits in the $75+ vicinity and many had expected a split previously. But 75 came and went and came again and went again. Still no split.  frown
If you’re a shareholder, you could contact Apple IR & voice your opinion smile

Welcome JToddH and let me add THANK YOU for you service to our country.  smile  smile

I for one am against a split.  Needless accounting costs and headaches for nothing more than a “cheap” stock price.  I don’t see how any investor can see a differance between 10 shares @ $100.00 or 100 shares @ $10.00.

Now if AAPL can just get as high as my BRK.B’s ...  big grin

I had a neighbor once who worked for Merril Lynch who told me (RE:AAPL) buy with your head, not your heart. That was around 2002. (Need I say more).

I’ve always been a hard-core Apple fan. I got my hands on an iPhone before I shipped out and was blown away.(Even with expectations already high for Apple).

The iTouch methinks will be icing on the cake. I’m banking on it.

Anywhoo, thanks for the comments and for your support!
...And HooaaH back to yah!

...and sorry Tommo, no ATT/iPhone service here frown

I was hoping for a split 4 months ago.  It never happened and I don’t see it happing now.

SJ I think wants aapl to be like goog.

We might still see one once we go past 200.  So start buying some in small portions. smile

Thank You for your service.

My friend is in Afghanistan right now after serving one year in Iraq. He informed me of what is going on there and I know it will be a long road for us.  I hope you stay safe and come home soon.

I don’t see a need for a split. I’d like to see the share price rise. I’m not sure there’s any real benefit to stock splits today. smile

I think the split would bring in more investors, whether or not that is a good thing is questionable. When we pass 200 in the last week of December I am probably going to start to want a split to help keeep some of the volitility out of the stock. Look at RIMM and where it went after the split.

I don’t think lack of a split has hurt Google. For Apple, there’s already close to a billion share outstanding.

I don’t see how AAPL could be any *more* volatile than it is.  I’m ambivalent about a split.  I *do* think a split makes the shares *seem* less expensive to less educated investors (and stupid analysts are also “fooled”...remember the recent AFB post about an “analyst” saying that shares of RIMM were down over half?  roll eyes  ).  But that may not be the best route to $450/share.  cool

Welcome to the forums JToddH!  *salutes*

A selfish and irrational part of me wants Apple to do a stock split to increase the perception of affordability so more people buy in, raising the share price in the process…but looking back at historical prices, it actually looks like brief *dips* in share price occurred shortly after each split, oddly enough.

IMHO, I don’t think Apple is due for a stock split anytime soon, and it could well be that Google’s share price is informing their position on this.  You might want to listen in (or look for sum-ups of) Apple’s next earnings conference call—an analyst might ask this very question.

Here is one person who thinks a split might be in the works.

http://aapl.bloggingstocks.com/

I agree with him.  A split around 200 for 3 to 1 will result in seeing aapl appreciate faster, since it shows board confidence in the future.

Please go up to 200 and then split smile

I think if we split aapl will reach 100 again faster then it reaches 300.

Here is someone else who thinks we might see a spilt.

The reason you’re wanting a split is exactly the reason I think a split wouldn’t be a good thing.
You don’t want the stock to go up too far too fast resulting in some ridiculous pe.
Let it get to where it’s going in a reasonable fashion…we already have enough volatility.

Appl is already a great out performer with a great future with it becoming apparent to more investors daily.

JToddH:  Welcome to AFB and Hooah!

I oppose a split.  I cannot offer sources to support my viewpoint, but I believe that a high stock price tends to reduce volatility.
